Which size is best? My N80 lens is 62mm, so it's not like I can use filters I already own. Of the three sizes Bernie makes, which do you all prefer, and why?

Jamie

Jamie,

If you already have 62 mm filters, why not use Bernie's variable adapter which has a 62 mm thread on the end of it?

Hector

The smaller adapters seem less... I don't know the word I am looking for... intrusive? I'm sorry if I sound ignorant, but I just can't visulaize how these adapters look/work. :o(

I only have one 62mm filter anyway... so I guess I'd p-refer to use one of the smaller adapters. Unless someone can explain why the variable is better.

Bernies variable CoolFix adaptor moves in and out, whcih means you can use it as a lens hood. In addition, you can use 3 different size filters with it. His site has pictures of the various adaptors attached to a 5700.

http://members.rogers.com/nextphoto/order5700.htm

1. 62mm Filters can attach directly to the end of CoolFix variable adaptor.

2. With Bernie's 46mm or 49mm filter adaptor, you can use 46/49mm filters. You don't need the CoolFix variable adaptor for this to work, but if you have both, the 46mm filter will fit inside the standard CoolFix adaptor.
(which also has 50mm threads for mounting Aux Lenses)

3. Bernie also has a version of his CoolFix adaptor (minus the 50mm threads) which works with the 49mm filter adaptor attached, and also fits inside the CoolFix adaptor (this one is not listed on his web site, but has been mentioned on the Forum) This is the one I use, because I have 49mm filters from my OM-2 system.

I would use the filter size "that works" for you, and then use a 62mm lens cap for the end of the CoolFix adaptor (lens hood & Aux lens mounting adaptor) to cover the entire lens assembly.

Rob,

I read AndyR's thread re: the variable adapter ( http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1007&message=5342329 ) and I don't think I want to get it at this time because of its interference with the flash. I do understand its other benefits, but I feel the need to start simple since I am such a beginner.

I like the idea of the 46mm Nikon filter set that Philipe mentioned in the above thread ( http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1007&message=5342671 ), so I think I will get the 46mm adapter.

My question is... will I now need to buy a 46mm lens cap, or will the cap that came with my 5700 fit on the 46mm adapter/filter?

Thanks,

Jamie

Bernies variable and love it as I can retract the outer part so there is not any vinetting at wide angle, and it takes the 62 mm filters. If you already have them, this would be your best choice.

Jamie,

Yes - no matter which filter size you go for, you will need to get a lens cap for that filter size. The lens cap on the 5700 will only fit the 5700, nothing else.

Lens caps come in three styles that I know of.... Screw-on, Snap-on (the style that came with the 5700), and Push-on. The Cap "teather cord" (if you want one) is usually not included with the cap). The choice is yours, but I would avoid the Screw-on style (too much time to take on/off)

I was in a similar situation when I first got bernies 52mm adapter. I was worried about the obtrusiveness of the variable adapter and the flash. In the end however I ended up regretting not having bought the variable adapter in the first place. I like the fact that it can protect you lens barrel and you can attach accessory lens to it. I use the variable adapter and 46mm adapter combo. I find this works best seeing that I can screw off the variable adapter whenever I need to use my flash (which is far less than I initially expected). In the end I ended up spending more money to replace the attachments and filters. If you think you may want the variable adapter in the future I would suggest going for it now.

49mm adaptor that fits right on the end of the lens, but I really like the variable adaptor because it doubles as a great sunshade when I don't have a filter attached to it.
