Anybody put the 70-300L thru its tough paces.

I'm particularly interested in sharpness wide open (f5.6) with full tele at 300.

Thanks.

I find it to be extremely sharp at 300! This was the first photo I took with the lens to see sharpness: And I was extremely happy with the result. The raw is much more impressive. I believe 7.1 can look slightly sharper, but I almost always shoot wide open at 300mm. 70mm benefits more from a small aperture reduction.

I admit that the first copy I had was not as sharp, but it was obviously not sharp. Second one seems perfect. I love the lens so much--even if I am looking forward to a 100-400 mk2 :)

What's disconcerting is the fact you needed a second lens.

I have that lens. Several months ago I sent it to service (too late to replace) and they changed so much of the lens it now has a new serial number.

Then I got a 70D that just doesn't seem to be better than my T2i (noise, cropping, etc). So I sent them both in. They said the 70-300L is well within specs.

They said there was a problem with the 70D that the Imaging Sensor Assembly had to be adjusted (it was out of alignment (?) and causing poor picture quality and excessive noise).

They are supposed to do a lens calibration before sending them both back.

Hopefully this will settle everything and I can to enjoy the gear.

By the way. Very, very good shots. Which camera are you using?

I am not quite sure I put the lens "through it's paces", but I do use mine a lot in the real world. Focus speed is amazing.

I like my copy, I think it's sharp.... although I am still improving...

I've had mine for about a month and absolutely love it. Very sharp and insanely fast focus.

I own several nice L lenses (50, 135, 24-105, 17-40). This is sharper than all but the 135 (which is legendary for sharpness).

Nice shot. Those tiny, fast moving birds are hard to capture with the detail you got.

Well done.

Thanks. Nice shots with a T2i.

I just went from a T2i to a 70D.

Could you tell me if you did any cropping on these images? If so, how much?

I love this lens , even though I don't use as much as I like ... I got rid of two 100-400 because of soft photos .. jumped on this lens and never looked back .. I can live without the extra 100 mm ... and now the 150-600 has arrived I will look at that this summer .. my grandkids stopped sports so the drags are what I use it for mostly otherwisw it's 15-85 is on the camera (70D) .. these photos are not wide open so judge for yourself ...

Thanks.

Actually, I'm just as interested in the amount of cropping using the 70D as I am about the sharpness of the lens.

No cropping with any of these, sorry. Check back later on this post and I will be able to show you some recent serious crops @300mm wide open with the original pic to compare. Have to go.

Eagerly await the crops.

Hi,

I love this lens. Below is a shot from the middle of last year at 300mm and f8.0. Not wide open but very good for cropping. I've been shooting with this lens wide open recently. Not yet downloaded those shots but I'll see what I've got in the next couple of days.

That's excellent!!!!

That's not a slight crop. That's pretty severe. You used about 20% of the image.

Thanks for posting.

Just remembered I also have these from last year. All hand-held without much time to compose the shot (I was supposed to be walking with my wife, not taking pictures :-D)

Thanks. Very good!!!

There are moderate crops which is good. I see you cropped strategicall to minimize the crop somewhat which is great. Good eye.

You used about 1/3 of the image which is also pretty good.

Thanks again. This is very helpful.

Very nice!
