I try to hit the South of NZ every year to go hiking. I always take m43 gear - lightweight and reliable. This year I took my brand-new second-hand X Pro and the 18-55mm with me purchased the day prior to leaving. All of my mountain/astro stuff was shot on my em-5 but I really loved the landscapes I took (handheld) with the Fuji at sea-level.

Great system and a LOT of fun to use. I'm a semi-convert.

Well, they look sharper on my screen prior to upload - but you get the idea.

Wow! Stunning photos of a beautiful place. Really makes me want to be there. Thanks for posting.

Really nice shots. Particularly like the composition of the second, and the colors of the third and fourth...

I've got some family in NZ and I keep promising myself I'll go over to visit - if only to have a look at some of the amazing scenery you lot have ;-)

Any reason for not taking your Fuji stuff up aloft with you ? - apart from familiarity and possibly size ?

Thanks for posting these, it gives me even more incentive to get down under, and to the nicer down under than the other island round there :-)

Nick

EDIT - meant to say that for whatever reason the rendering here on DPR is a bit soft compared to what you'll see on your own computer.

NZ is just amazing - particularly the South Island. Some brilliant hiking outside Wanaka and Haast.

Just weight. The EM5 is light and I can take 3 to 4 lenses for just the weight of the X Pro and the 18-55.

I insist.

Yeah. Shame that. :)

Cheers.

Great images. I particularly like Nr. 1. Were they really taken with the old Xp1? I thought at first it must have been the XT1.

The "old" XP1????

;)

New to me!

And it's not like that second shot, done with the EM5, is lacking anything in quality! They're all excellent...

Whoops!!!

Mind you, that was (I think) the 17.5 Voigtlander. :)

Easy mistake!

nice shots !!! we wanna go NZ for long time but got no time/$$$ LOL

any link for other shots @ NZ with EM5?

Those are great!!!

I'm planning an Australia/New Zealand trip later this year (sept/oct). Will be in Perth for a cousins wedding, possibly Sydney for a few days, and then New Zealand.

Not exactly where to go or do in New Zealand yet though. Any suggestions?? :)

Mistake - why? It's an incredible shot!

But that Voitlander is a tank of a lens. For small primes, m43 has some very good ones, but that lens is quite big. For that focal length, I'd definitely go with the Fui 23mm f1.4. Both pretty great for IQ, but the whole package is notably smaller and lighter with the Fuji compared to the EM5 with that particular lens...

Wow, great shots. #3 is my favorite. Pat yourself on the back, you did well with your new XP1!

If you have limited time in NZ head towards the South Island and start in Queenstown then possibly Milford Sound, Mount Cook and the West coast if you have time. All of NZ has beautiful scenery but the South Island is the most photogenic. It doesn't matter what time of year as it is very changeable weather due to being a small island in the middle of the roaring 40's.

Depends what you want to do/see. If you want to go hiking away from the tourist walks I have a few suggestions. If you want to just go sightseeing grab a car and do a circuit of the South Island, it's hard to go wrong. Basing yourself in Wanaka is a reasonable option for walks and drives.

The "mistake" was including it with the X Pro shots. Easy to do since the Voigt has "personality" - something that I feel most of the m43 range lacks for me, and I've owned most of them. I do like the 12mm Olympus though, and the Rokinon 7.5 is a lot of fun. I sold my Voigtlander 25mm due to lack of use but the 17.5 is a definite keeper. Yes, it's a bit of a tank, but the images it produces are lovely.

I'd like to have a go with the 23mm. Who knows? Maybe the Voigt will see Ebay after all! ;)

I used to live in the South Island (Dunedin) for many years and although there is this perception that the South Island is more beautiful there still is a lot to see and do on the North Island, e.g. Mordor, Tongariro, Northland with its Kauri Forests, Ulurewa National Park etc.

So not all bad up here ... here are a couple I did with the X-E1 and the 14mm last year in April on the Tongariro Crossing. I no longer have the X-E1 and have moved on to primes only ...

The Fujis not really that heavy, just the right weight me thinks, the X-E2 I use now (same weight as the E1) with either the 23 or the 56 very well balanced, the 35 I use too almost a tad too light for my taste!

Good luck either way!
