hx400v

Thank you, by speed are you talking shot to shot, auto focus or other, how does it compare to the HX300.

.

I don't want anyone to think that I can't eventually get the spot I want in focus using manual focus with this camera. It's just that it's not as refined as the manual focus on my A65 and RX100. The challenge will be to get it done quick enough and accurately enough for something like birds. Static subjects that you can take your time on are no problem as you can work it back and forth a bit to get it nailed.

This shot shows that I have the navel of the apple in dead center focus, which is what I wanted. The apple is sitting right in front of the box of Cuties. Shot full zoom, on tripod, from 15 feet, ISO80.

And here's the box of Cuties focused on the surface of the box --

How do you like the speed and IQ of the HX400v to the Nikon P600? trying to decide between the to, thank you for any help!

I tried some other setups and found one that is working better on MF for me. I turned of MF Assist and set the Custom button to Focus Magnification. This lets me control the amount of magnification on screen during the MF sequence. I'll try it on some birds tomorrow.

I will be doing a comparison between the 2 camera this afternoon but a quick test yesterday the speed of the new camera is much faster and the noise from the zoom in video mode is virtually gone this is a welcomed surprise but l think a firmware might be on the cards because there is a couple of small issues that will need to be addressed but it's early days.

Nikon AF compared to the sony is a disaster. Menue speed idem dito. IQ about the same except for a different more pleasing to the eye noise pattern of the nikon. And the colours of the nikon are great too.

But the af is the main problem imo. Can't imagine nikon did not notice that.

I got my HX400V from B&H today.

Two big disappointments so far for me. You can NOT turn off Steady Shot on this camera. When you have the camera on tripod and trying to focus on an object, especially with manual focus, the image is floating across the field of view like a sheet in the wind. Second big problem is the Manual Focus itself, which is the main reason I bought this camera. Even thought it is set up like the manual focus on my A65 and RX100II with Focus Peaking, Focus Assist, and Focus Magnification it does not function the same. When you start turning the focus ring the focus point may or may not start to move. And when it does move it may shoot past your focus point. It is not a linear movement through the focus plane. I called Sony and discussed both these issues, the Steady Shot and the Manual Focus. They basically ended up saying, "That's the way it is with this camera. You cannot disengage Steady Shot and the Manual Focus is really "Gumby Pseudo Fooled Ya ! Manual Focus".

However -- The image quality is looking quite good. I'm still not sure yet whether I'm going to keep this camera or return it and stay with the SX50. If these two issues where not there I would likely keep it. It's really amazing that Sony would not allow for disabling Image Stabilization and include a lame manual focus on this camera.

I thought I would report on this in case there was someone else out there that was looking at this camera mainly for the manual focus.

I'll post some images when we get some decent weather. Today was on the verge of rain all day.

.

Thanks for pointing out these issues Doc. They are definitely useful in weighing the purchase decision.

This pretty much rules out the Nikon.

One can disable MF assist. Or not pressing the shutter halfway. In both cases manual focus magnification does not work.

I'll second KJaay's comment. Are these (birds, squirrel & watch) all SOOC or was there some PP magic applied?

Thanks!
.

Mine are SOOC for this thread. I'm using Av mode with standard camera settings.

No magic other than a tripod and a wired shutter release.

:)

No problem at all. Just used AF. Shots are sooc.

I have taking photos with the HX100, HX300 & the new HX400v, there is a time difference that could not be helped but you get the general idea.
