Does Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (non VC) autofocus in Nikon D5200 live mode?

AFAIK the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non-VC does not AF unless the camera has a built-in motor, which the D5200 does not have.

There are two models of the non vc Tamron 17-50. The old version A16 didn't have an internal focus motor but the current A16II version does. I should know, I've got one! Brilliant lens by the way

My Tamron is SP AF 17-50mm XR LD Aspherical (IF) DiII (Non VR), Model: A16NII.

So it should be able to autofocus in live mode then?

But my Tamron can't autofocus in live mode. I've try to detach & attach it twice but it still cannot autofocus in live mode. Is it mean some part of my len my broken?

Does the camera try to autofocus? Does the lens change focus when you press the shutter or does nothing happen at all?

I have an older Nikon (D300). Autofocus in live view is pretty bad with any of my lenses; it's not something I ever use. But I just tried it to see what happens. My 35mm f/1.8 eventually came into focus. My Tamron 70-300 tried to autofocus but never achieved good focus. It did move in and out, though.

Remember, on a Nikon, your lens is stopped down in live view. So if you're set on f/11 or something like that, the sensor isn't getting much light and may not be able to determine focus.

There are 2 live view modes on my camera. One tries to autofocus off the sensor while the other one brings the mirror back down and focuses with the phase detectors. This works but gives you a long delay with blackout and numerous clattering noises.

What situations are you encountering that make it appropriate to use live view and autofocus?

In live mode, my tamron do not autofocus, but I will focus when I press the shutter. It also doesn't autofocus during video mode. Since this len have a build-in motor, so I assume it should be able to autofocus? I'm just wondering if there are any broken parts for my len.

This could be a firmware issue with the lens, as the Tamron would have been designed before live view was developed ( I think ). It may be the camera does not get some communication it requires from the lens.
