What I think of the Sony A77 is that it is an excellent camera the only fault I find is the noise in high ISO shots and the Jpeg shots are a little sharper then raw which is also very noisy but this camera compare to my sony A-100 is a big improvement just wish those issues would have been fix with firmware updates that would bring out the full potential of the sensor but guess sony is not big on firmware updates

There have been several Firmware updates to the A77.. not sure where you get the idea that Sony is not big on them. The made some IQ improvements from what I read.. Fixed some Bugs and created some settings.

You can't fix the noise from the sensor with firmware. The A100 was 10 MP the A77 is 24 MP. The per pixel noise will be higher.. if you don't over process the images when they are printed or scaled for screen usage the noise you see from what is an extreme magnification will be reduced or removed.

As to JPGs there are a number of settings for JPGS in the camera.
  • You can turn the noise reduction up and down
  • You can also turn the sharpness up and down..
No firmware update need, just some more time with a good book like Gary Friedman's A77 guide.

If you don't like the JPG look.. learn what controls the camera has to customize them..

Enjoy the camera it is pretty great..

I agree your review.

OTOH we can explain the diffrence between RAW vs JPEG by the existence of the "specific area noise reduction system" for JPEG (which enhance sharpness a tad at the same time. Unfortunately this features are not referenced as much). So it's not a secrecy that this camera is dedicated to .jpeg shots as raw as well (especially fine for photojournalism and sports with its high fps count).

I don't know why so little love for landscape photography, since I makes super shots with a Minolta 24mm prime F/2,8 without the sensor outresolve this lens (as supposed), that tell to me the camera is still brillant for landscape too.

I think there is a misunderstanding from the causes of some supposed limitation not really described, because this camera is very picky (means very capable and underevaluated).

But overall I agree the level you give of 4,5 (but not about all of your conclusions.)

Big thanks for sharing this.

"per pixel noise" VS "per area noise", that's the question!...

Hi,

When I read this, it was not easy to understand if we was able to turn NR down to zero (or not). For real you can't turn it to "OFF", but only decrease to "low" (what means one step down only).
  • You can also turn the sharpness up and down..

I used to own an A100 and believe it or not the per pixel noise of the A100 was higher than the A77. When I look at my old A100 shots it amazes me how much noise that camera had even at iso 400.

That is a fair assessment accept that I would give a much higher score for landscape photography.

i agree that landscape photography is a strong point with the A77.

I agree with you Michael on the Minolta 24 2.8 it is a nice small size that really delivers and is always attached to my Bird Bag and has come in handy with the 77 or 99. The 11-16 Tokina works real well on the 77 too and wish Tokina would make that Tank of a lens in FF I would have both .
