SELP18-105G: Best option for travel?

Upon looking further, the only time I can see the lens FL reported is if I am in Playback and in the four histogram display mode.

no FL display, really wish there is FL marking in the lens like any lens in this world ;)

would be quite difficult because its not a mechanical zoom.. plus it doesnt extend.
Is it possible to zoom using the ring instead of the motor, so that you can control the zoom speed, I think. Can anyone confirm this?

There are two rings on the 18-105. One controls the zoom electronically and the other controls the focus. There is no way to set the lens to allow manual control over the zoom. You must zoom electronically using either the slider switch or the zoom ring.

I use only zoom ring and dont use Power zoom lever at the left side, which is even slower than zoom ring. and zoom ring doesnt lock when it hits the 18 or 105mm :) Sony better ask us to test their Lenes

you can rotate the ring manually but it actuates the motor. you can keep rotating it infinitely even after youve reached either end of the focal range and the motor will not do anything once it has reached the end. hence, no possibility of markings.

its meant to be a video lens, quiet and smooth while moving as fast as possible. i think they did a decent job with it (at the price), even though it isnt as fast as we would like it to be..

As said, no possibility of marking the focal on the ring,

BUT

the ring is very reactive, and you can control the zooming speed nearly as a manual zoom.

the swith give you low to medium speed,

the ring, nearly the speed you turn the ring, you can see a small delay if you turn it really quickly.

the feeling is near the one of a ring of a quality zoom that doesn't extend.
