Old Nikon cams that use CF?

Hi all,

I've been using my D70s since 2005 or 2006 which has been with me to some amazing places. These days I enjoy making photos of food and beer with it at home (with a Nikkor 50mm f1.8). There is this nagging fear that it will die suddenly!

All my CF cards are in good condition and I thought I'd find another Nikon someday to replace the D70s and still be able to use my SB-400 and the 50mm for food and beer photos. So I tried and looked up the last affordable Nikon cams that use CF... nowhere stocks it anymore.

I must surely live under a rock... what happens to old cameras? Do people just chuck them? Where to start looking for them?

Thanks.

Hi;

If you wish to have CF Nikon camera buy a used D300. There is an EX condition on sale in KEH.com. Since you entered your location as Antarctica in dpreview I guess they will charge postage as much as the camera.
Alex41,

thanks very much for that link. I'm in Europe. I have to find out shipping cost. Probably there's duty to be paid. Or I can ask an acquaintance in Canada to order and ship it to me. Either way it's going to cost a bit on shipping and duty.

I go and check what else they have besides the D300 that takes CF.

Thanks again!
If you can purchase in Canada, you might want to consider a new D300s, available between CAD $1200 and $1300 ($1083 and $1173 US)...

Thanks for that, Patco. My friend in YVR has located a used D200.

Am so glad I asked. Thanks again!

Cheers

Hi;

I was advising to buy it from KEH because you can send it back after an initial examination period if you don’t like it. Anyway they ship to Canada but Europe probably too expansive.

Nikon stopped including CF cards to consumer cameras since the introduction of D80 in 2006. The older professional DX cameras D100, D200, D300 and D300s all use CF cards as well as FX D700.

In these days SDHX card are very cheap so check with D90, D3100, D5100 and D7000 or even newer D3200, D5200, D3300, D5300 and D7100 in you area.

My first DSLR was also CF based (D70). Just like you, I wanted to protect my investment in CF cards.

If you shoot RAW on a modern camera, you'll burn through those CF cards quickly. A high capacity SD card just doesn't cost that much. Yea, it's seems wasteful to no use all those CF cards you have sitting around, but it really shouldn't be a driving force in your camera decision.

Keep the D70s around as a backup camera, or as a camera you can take places you wouldn't want to risk your newer camera (ex. on a boat).

Btw: What makes you think your D70s is ready to die? While I rarely use it anymore, my ten year old D70 still works quite well.

True, SD cards are cheap these days. I'm told to 'just buy a new camera because it's so much easier'. I have bought some old cameras and in the end they cost more to track down batteries, cables, chargers etc.

Some of the advantages of new cams are tilting/rotating massive displays, and 'live view'. With the D70s I have to compose using the viewfinder in macro mode which is sometimes awkward.

I will check out the cams you suggested. Newer cams are not a problem to get here. A simple one that meets my need (for food/beer photos at home) is fine.

Thanks!

I'm a mad old-fashioned woman who doesn't let go of old working things. So many new cams with advanced features have been released since the D70s but I don't have an urge to acquire them.

So far I have no reason to think it's about to die. It's still going strong actually, battery capacity is showing its age, however.

Perhaps I shouldn't slag off newer cams so fast. Well then I have some research to do :)

Thanks!

My first DSLR camera had a 6MP sensor and 1GB CF cards were adequate. My 12MP camera needed 4GB cards at a minimum and ideally 8GB CF cards. My 36MP D800e needs 32GB cards.

Whatever camera you are buy in the future will have a 24MB sensor and produce 15GB RAW files or larger. Your current cards will be too low in capacity and to slow in terms of file writes by the camera and not usable for video.

The CF cards are an outdated format. The SDXC cards sell for half the cost of their Compactflash counterparts and can be read with the card readers built into most laptops and netbooks. The only advantage at this time is that one can get a larger capacity of 128GB with Compactflash cards.
