Beginner with Canon 60D.. 15-85mm or 24-105mm?

I recently bought the Canon 60D body only. I am looking for a all purpose lens. My two options have come down to either the Canon 15-85mm lens or the Canon 24-105mm lens.

I checked the local kijiji to find a used one, and the 15-85mm sells between $500 to $575 most, whereas the 24-105mm sells between $700 to $900 most.

Anyone have any suggestions one which is the better deal for the price? Is it worth spending the extra for the 24-105mm? Seeking some advice from my fellow photographers.

Thanks :)

I would think the 15-85mm would be more useful for a cropped sensor camera. 24mm likely won't be wide enough for you as a general purpose lens. If you want longer focal lengths, you'll need a second lens anyway.

15-85mm.

The 24-105mm is designed as a general purpose lens on a full frame body like the 6D. On your crop sensor body it doesn't really have enough wide angle for a general purpose lens and only makes sense if (1) you intend to upgrade to FF at some time in the future and (2) you also buy a wide angle lens like the 10-22mm.

You can't go wrong with either, but you should ask yourself which one works better for your subjects, by themselves lenses are worth little unless you like hoarding stuff (hey, some people do!). Also, the 15-85 might be less heavy and balance better on the 60D? For their price I would also point out that you can get a couple of primes, some people hate changing lenses, some of us "have seen the light" with primes - but to each his or her own.

24 mm is too long for an all-purpose lens for APS-C. The 15-85 is a great lens with a very useful range and good IQ.

On crop 15-85 no worries.

If wide angle isn't a concern the 18-135 STM is an alternative. Though mind that 3mm wide is significant.

All purpose on Crop sensor, 15-85 is the way to go! Covers wide angle to mid telephoto while with 24-105 you get potrait to mid telephoto. You can get 24-105 if you don't care about wide angle or plan to buy UWA 10-22mm for the wide angle pics.

This may not apply to the OP, but I think for most people getting into photography, it's a mistake to get the body only. Canon makes the EF-S 18-55 kit lens in large quantities, and there are definitely economies of scale. Great value on a lens with good to very good IQ and IS. Canon more or less throws in the lens as a kit with the body.

The EF-S a55-250mm IS is a natural bundle.

Consider the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM, Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS HSM, Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 before you think of 15-85mm.

15-85mm is not a fast lens & the IQ is not in the same league as the other lenses I have mentioned.

The 15-85 covers a very useful range from very wide to medium-telephoto. Going with 18-55 means having to swap any time one needs a bit more reach. If one wants a lens that can be carried throughout one's day out without having to carry about another, 15-85 and 18-135 are very good choices.

Also, 15-85 is a darn good lens. I have the 17-55 2.8, and 70-200 2.8, but I almost never go wider than 5.6 for outdoor shooting. In fact, 15-85 is the next on my 'to get' list, cause I often find 55 a bit short, and mounting the 70-200 for that little extra is frustrating.

they heavily discount the kit lens with many bundles so it's a cheap way to start off until you want something with more reach or a larger aperture
