Canon 10D file numbering

suggestions, but I simply wish to know if the 10D is capable of
writing to a single folder instead of multiple folders. Thank you.
Seth,

Everyone assumes you're an idiot and tries to help you be less so. All of these replies and not yet an answer to your simple question.

The answer to your question is a simple NO. You're stuck with the folders.

I must admit, I gotta problem with typo's

It sounds like you are using the computer’s file manager to copy the CF contents. A photo download utility will extract the images copy them into a single folder of the user’s choice on the HD. I use MS Windows for the OS and the plain vanilla Canon ZoomBrowser (ZB), this is different from the File Viewer Utility and comes on the Canon CD with the camera. I create a new folder with a date prefix and description suffix with either the computer’s file manager or ZB, select and copy all of the images from the CF to the new folder. ZB does not display the individual folders on the CF, only the images. I don’t know if the Mac version is different. I have a fair degree of concern with letting images reside only on the CF in the camera and generally copy the images as soon after I shoot as practical. In my situation it is quicker to download an entire session and sift through the images on the PC.

Just got my 10D and learned through both practice and the manual
that the camera saves 100 images at a time in individual folders it
creates on the CF card. I have the camera set to chronological
numbering (so as to ensure unique file names throughout the
workflow) and I find this multiple folder scheme incredibly
cumbersome.

Once back at my computer I tend to view my images straight off the
CF card, and I find I'm forced to switch folders multiple times to
view all of the images using the included Canon File Viewer
Utility. To make matters worse, if I delete images off the card,
thereby making room for more images, the new pictures will go into
yet another new folder.

Is there a way to disable this functionality? I would very much
like to have only one folder of images to work with. Thanks.

Check this software out. It has all sorts of download options and may do what you want.

I'm good with all your points:

• I do make use of a CF card reader (apologies if I gave an
incorrect impression).
• I don't use the CF cards for anything other than in digital cameras.
• I always format the card in the camera, and if I switch brands
(from, say, a CoolPix to a 10D), I'll reformat it for each switch.
Though I typically use each card in each camera separately.
• I burn CDs of individual projects once they're complete.

None of this helps me with the initial workflow, however. Space
isn't an issue (HD's are cheap, as are CDs) and speed isn't an
issue (Firewire all around). I appreciate everyone's input and
suggestions, but I simply wish to know if the 10D is capable of
writing to a single folder instead of multiple folders. Thank you.

I don't store things in Canon's 100's folders on my HDD or my archival media; nor do I edit things on CF.

However, I did answer the OP's question, which is really what he wanted to know. The answer is NO, you can't disable the 100's folders in-camera.

Windows won't change any files unless you specifically tell it to.
More important than the OS you use is knowing what you're doing.

As the saying goes, computers do what you tell them to do, not
what you want them to do. :-)
The default action for all .JPG files is open with "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer". Go ahead and open a file with the aforementioned program, rotate the picture counter-clockwise and exit. Open it back up and boom-baby it will be permanently rotated i.e. the file has been modified without asking you a damn thing...

Cheers,
Michael

When I download, I just drag all files in the different folders to the first folder and then do one operation. You could do that when you are viewing the CF images. Maybe you could initially create specialized folders and then drag shots to those folders when you look at new shots. I agree with those that say you are taking some risk. I download asap and then download twice to two different hard drives. Leon
