OT - I did it! Ordered the 10D

I have a Mac and a PC but I usually do my photo work on the mac so Breeze Browser won't work. I was thinking of using the Canon support and the new plug-in for Photoshop as well as iView. Have never worked with raw files before. :) Ann
Already got the micro drive, extra battery, Sigma 28-70 EX
ASPHERICAL, Canon 70-200 f4 L and extended warranty from B&H (boy
are they fast!). Body coming Thursday from Profeel.com

So we can experience these growing pains together Ann! Just hope
we get good ones, there are some focus and other issues running
around with the 10D. :(

Have fun! Cindy
Don't fret the focus issues... there are very few that have a
problem, and most of those are the earlier cameras.

The suggested fix (and first thing to do with the camera) is to go
to the menu and then clear "all the camera settings".

It looks like there my be some bad settings from the machine that
dumps them into the circuit board. Clearing all camera settings in
the menu is like rebooting your computer.

My 10D is razor sharp and focuses dead on. And the low light focus
is great. If I can see it in the finder, I can get a focus lock.

images from the 10D,they will(appear) soft compared to the 717 out
of camera..But after post processing,WOW....I shoot everything in
RAW and convert in C1LE or breeze browser then go to

What a coincidence....adding to the cross platform folks here which
is a kick any way you look at it. I really like the equipment mix.

I have to keep on rocking here because Tris meets this afternoon
with Bruce Dale ex Geographic and certainly one of the leading
digital and PS experts i the country. Tris will be working with
Bruce for a year on an independent HS project, shooting, pp and
getting critiqued....an unbelievable opportunity...the deal is that
he has to pass on all the good stuff to me.

Saturday he picks up his award at the KC which will find me tearing
from graduation in Fairfax downtown to see if I can catch the end
of it.

Lets stay tuned....gotta contact Jim about his stuff....cheers for
now.

I ended up buying the body at onecall.com because they had it in stock and B&H didn't. I bought the lenses from B&H though. So glad to hear you liked it. I took a chance because I too was a bit concerned about the size. It was when I read a couple of ladies' posts about it that I realized it would be okay. Also looked at some pictures from it. Yum! Ann
I keep going back and forth on the 10D; first I wanted it, then I
decided who wants to go back to lugging a heavy camera and lenses.
Then last weekend, the salesman opened up the cabinet, gave me some
media to use and let me play with it. And I fell in love with it! I
wouldn't buy it here because of the Japanese warranty, but I found
myself checking out the B&H site the other night...

Helen
I just committed myself to mucho $ for the 10D and two lenses.
Sigma 15-30 and Canon 28-135. I plan to keep my Sony 717 too as I
know there will be situations where I'll want a more portable
camera. Phew! I graduate with an AA in graphic design on Friday and
this is my (big) present to myself for three years of hard work.
('Course I was kinda planning to get one anyhow.) I originally
planned only to get one lens but I learned that I'm getting an
award on Friday that almost pays for the second lens. Didn't take a
second to decide to get both. Now I've got a big learning curve
ahead of me. (Another good reason to keep the 717.) Everything is
supposed to arrive Thursday. I bought the camera from onecall.com
and the lenses and a case from B&H. (They didn't have the body in
stock.) I'll post when I get a few pictures. :) Ann

I admit I am a happy camper about it all. Didn't expect to win the award. In fact I feel a bit sheepish about it since I am an employee here as well as a student. Would like to see it go to a "real" student except that I AM a "real" student... lol. So I'm gonna take it and feel good about it. :) Ann
And congrats on the new purchase as well! I think you'll be happy
with those lenses. I went L, but am sort of wishing I would have
done the 28-135 and a good non-L 70-200. Oh well. And yes, there
will be a huge learning curve, but it's fun. Kind of like learning
photography all over again.

I did have several problems with my camera interspersed with
amazing photographs. I just returned from returning it and got a
brand new one! Yeah!

Anxious to hear of your learning curve exploits and seing your photos.

Congrats again on the camera, but way moreso your award and degree!
Job well done!!!!

You'll love the 10D. I still have my 717 but havent used it much,
feels like a toy after using the 10D, not a slam, just feels like a
toy since its so small and light..Went to a basketball scrimmage
yesterday and it was quite dark so I jacked the ISO up to 3200 and
shot away. I was surprised how good they looked, about like 400 on
my Sony 717. Here is one of the bad ones

here is a 100% crop

and same crop after Neat Image

These were large JPEG's right from the camera and no adjustments
except neat image on the one. Taken with Canon 70-200L 2.8 non IS.
I was impressed!

With the 10D you multiply by 1.6 to get the 35mm equivalent. So 28-135 is more like 45-216 whereas the Sony is 38-190 in 35 equivelent terms. That's why I also got the Sigma 15-30 - equivalent to 24-48. Should give me the full range but I will have to change lenses to achieve it. :) Ann

I saw photos by Roberta F and others and realized what it could do. I knew I was REALLY cooked when I woke up in the middle of the night and said to myself "I really can't afford this now." When that happens I KNOW I'm going to buy it anyhow. ;) Ann

We just got back from chatting w/Bruce and that all went well....he wants Tris to go out and shoot "contrasts" and to look at his portfolio. He also made a big deal of self advocacy in the field.....by that I mean sending pics to newspapers when appropriate....making the point that published shots in a portfolio carry a lot more clout than unpublished ones...it was pretty interesting.

He is testing a 2MP panasonic with IS and showed us some 13 by 16 enlargements he made from the camera....we were as astounded as he....those pics could have come from a 7x7....he said he would never have expected such detail...... that he could push so hard in terms of size....not only that but he shot them by hand at 1/20 sec...the IS was that good.

I've been lurking there for awhile now . . . scary place! I have
yet to make a post.
It is indeed a scary place; however it is getting better as the
"working majority" have begun to participate more and the "noisy
few" are getting drowned out. I have hope for it yet..

A few more tips. First some background.. on my 707 I was shooting
95% manual mode. I used my spot meter extensively. So, when I got
my 10D I also went straight into "M" and enabled the
center-weighted ("fat spot"). This is considerably more difficult
as compared to using the spot meter on my 707; but with practice is
getting much better.

Also, I suggest you stick to HIGH aperture numberss (high f-stops,
small aperture) and fast shutter speeds in the beginning.

The reason to use small apertures is the DOF difference is amazing.
f/2.8 on a DSLR is WAY WAY different from f/2.8 on your 707.
Different to the point that f/2.8 on the 10D is really a special
case aperture. In the beginning, stick to f/8 or f/11 or f/16.

On shutter speed, try sticking to 1/(2f) (where f is focal length).
For instance, if you have your 28-138 set at 28, try to at least be
at 1/56 (or 1/60 in this case). If you're at 100mm on your lens,
try to use 1/200 or faster. This is shooting handheld.

Don't forget you have plenty of lattitude in these settings because
of the 10D's excellent high ISO performance. So, if you ever need
faster shutter, or smaller aperture, there's always a chance you
can get a full stop by clicking ISO up a notch. This was a big
adjustment for me because I always tried to leave my 707 set at
ISO100; however, ISO200 and 400 are now VERY usable. Even 800 with
some processing... 1600 and 3200 are reserved for those cases
where it's just better to get something rather than missing the
shot completely.

These two things (fast shutter + small aperture) alone will help
you get beautiful images out of your 10D from DAY ONE!

Enjoy.

This is a matter of some disagreement in CSTF but from my pov the jpeg images from the 1D are just about as good as the RAW ones....the RAW is also a bit of a fiddle....so! so far I've shot in JPEG hi res 90% of the time. My advice is not to worry about RAW till much later....or do a comparative test...I think you'll see what I mean.

i just noticed that you are the one who lives in bellingham. and i just noticed that you attend(ed) whatcom community college.

i have been looking into moving to that exact area (don't have my husband convinced yet!), and i have looked a little into western washington u. my thought is possibly biology degree going towards zoology or the sort, but lately i am thinking again how i would love to get into photography for a career. are there any good programs in the area for that? and can you offer any advice about wwu or whatcom community in general? oh, and i am certainly no artist, so i couldn't go the type of route you did!

anything you could offer would be greatly appreciated - i just have this huge fascination with that area, but it is a long way from home for me!

sorry for the questions, but i just had to inquire
thanks, Lee
oh and happy move in together anniversary!

Hi Ann, Cindy and any other STFers who took the plunge!

Wow Ann and Cindy...I knew you were getting the bug! You will love it! I've been out every day after work with my 10D. I'm trying IR right now.
Hope the 10Ds arrive soon so you can get some sleep!

Maybe we need to ask Phil for a new Forum called the 7x7/10D Talk! So far just about everyone has kept their 717s.

Enjoy and keep us updated!

OK, this is getting wierd - it is our 19th today (wedding - not move in. lol).

Tho my husband isn't so into photography - I think the new camera made him feel leftout. He came in today with a long face and said "I want a new bike". lol. I guess I better get bike shopping. Congrats! Cindy

BTW - the 10d and gear cost over 3X as much money as we had between us when we got married 19 years ago. lol
And it is my 25th move in together anniversary too!
