BackControl Wheel on the Panasonci Lumix Fz200

The same here, after almost 18 months of good use the rear wheel stop working sundenly correctly since today...

I can turn it but can't validate the option like going on exposition compansation and do a compansation when i'm in A,S, P mode for exemple.

My camera is no more on waranty no more so i don't know what i will do...
Ouch. Sorry to hear you're having the same problem, kryzt.

I'd like to see Panasonic replace the wheel on their next model with the type of toggle they used on the FZ35. The toggle works like a dream and there are no worries about your thumb slipping off the wheel while maneuvering through the options. I guess we'll just wait and see.

Me, too. I took it to my local camera repair shop and was given an estimate of $180, even if it just needed a cleaning as it is a major operation to disassemble to get to the area. Instead of fixing it, I'm using other cameras in my stable. I have to tell you, I really miss the FZ200. I still have it and have tried the alternative method of adjusting exposure compensation but it takes time and I've missed birds.

Perhaps the alternative method will work for you. Press the trashcan button, then press the top of the wheel, then press the left or right side of wheel to adjust.

I tried the Radio Shack contact cleaner but no success.

Oops, when you press the trash can button, it takes you into the quick menu. Select exposure compensation, then you can do the adjustment. In your settings, activate menu resume option then in the future when you press the trash can, it will be on exposure compensation.

Thanks myssvictoria, yes i saw with the trash,Q button you can manuelly change all the exposure parameters , i will do it even it will be a little slower than before...

I keep going with my fz200 ;)

Looks like it's my turn for my FZ200 rear thumbwheel to fail, just like all the others. I might have done a bit better than most, reaching image P1570076 before the failure, but the rear wheel now only senses scrolling but not the inward presses.

It's going to be difficult using the not so "Quick" menu instead...

You learn something new every time you press the shutter
Wow, I sorry to hear that Bruce. My current count is at 1150639 and still going strong. I forget how to compute how many shutter actuations that is but not nearly as many as yours yet, I don't think.
Panasonic's number is P<3-digit folder#><4-digit image number>, where the folder numbers start at 100 and the leading image number digit is always zero. Therefore, a close approximation is:
  • Approx count = (folder #-101) x 1000 + current image#
so you should be near (115-101) x 1000 + 639 = 14,639!
I use the thumbwheel quite often too as I really like its functionality but it is constantly on my mind to be careful with it after reading this thread on it. Not that I actually know how to use it any differently, you either use it or you don't.
Yeah - I'm careful too and it was working last night when I kicked off a star trails test but it wasn't working today. It did dip below freezing last night but it was working when I left it on the intervalometer for 4 hours.
It reminds me of a situation with my car that has a manual transmission. About a year and half after I got it, used, a part in the stick shift broke and had to be replaced. I was surprised that the part was made out of plastic, a supposedly very durable plastic, but plastic nonetheless. It just seems to me that any part whether it is a vehicle's stick shift or a camera's thumbwheel should practically be indestructible when it serves such a primary function.
I had a similar problem with my last manual transmission - the shift mechanism was seated in a plastic gasket beneath the car and when I pushed down to switch to reverse it would pop out of the gasket. I still remember crawling under that car in an icy parking lot at 20 below, using a roadside rock to pound the linkage back into the gasket. I avoided reverse until I could get it serviced!
I hope you can get it fixed for free or cheaply because that is clearly a camera defect. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed with my camera.
Panasonic doesn't help much when their website estimates $180 just based on model number (yep, it's estimated before you even tell them what the problem is!) and there's no option to request an actual quote - they want your credit card and shipping info so I bailed out as I don't know if I'll fix it. Maybe I'll find a service phone number so I can talk to a human being.
