Pen e-p**

Awesome info Michael, I didn't even think to check for dealer listings on the Olympus site! I will have to look them all over tomorrow morning!

Any benefit from buying direct from Olympus? on Amazon I can get it from Ritz for 490$ shipped

The other shops looks like I might miss the deal or do not have it in stock.
From Olympus, you get charged sales tax. Thiis saves you $101. All silver.

EPM2 two lens kit on amazon for $389.

A year ago, I almost pulled the trigger on just the EPM2 and 14-42 for $ 449.

A $10 filter would only degrade the IQ of a lens, not increase the EV range of the camera.

My nickel, since the penny is being discontinued...
Jeff.
And it DOES allow you to shoot wide open with negligible image degradation, at far lower cost than a vertical traveling mechanical shutter which is fast enough to go to 1/8000, a feature that tends to result in cameras that are highly susceptible to shutter shock, as the E-P5 is. as was well documented in this venue's tests.

SS at 1/8000? :-O

No, shutter shock at lower speeds (1/50 to 1/400), exacerbated by the faster-travelling curtain needed to enable the 1/8000 speed, thus making the camera less useful overall. I realize it's a tricky concept for you to grasp.

E-PM2 is the best value in m43 currently. Great for those who value lightweight, don't care about viewfinders (iPhone generation) and/or tilting screens (the most recent fad). It offers plenty of controls through touchscreen and some buttons. It's a full featured m43 camera and not some crippled down P&S type. It has all the enthusiast features: advanced wireless flash functionality, hot shoe, wireless shutter remote allowing full featured time lapse captures, full manual controls, in camera Raw processing, HDR bracketing, high burst shooting, enormous degree of customizations, etc. This generation of Oly has truly outstanding metering and AWB accuracy. More expensive Oly models will give you some additional but far less important features and they come with a lot more bulk and higher price tags. With current advances in mirorrless, every year there is a new model with substantial improvements so cameras are more like gadgets nowadays getting obsolete very quickly (unless you stick with Canon or Nikon). I suggest investing in quality lenses at this point as those seem to hold value quite well. In a couple of years, $1000 should be able to get you an m43 camera matching AF tracking of the best DSLR of today, built-in nd filter, flash sync at any speed, etc.

Oh and did I mention I really like my E-PM2 to complement my gripped E-M5?

I would have preferred the Panasonic GM1, but the price difference was just to steep.

I am glad being able to grab the E-PM2 with Panny 14 2.5 (almost glued on it) when I want to travel light. I am using aperture priority and find the ergonomics pretty easy. Touch screen is a huge plus.

To elaborate, I am pretty much set on getting the PM2 and just wanted to make sure that the lack of physical controls does not mean lack of control, If that makes any sense. That would be about the only deal breaker for me right now.
It does not mean lack of control. The E-PM2 is excellent value.

Funny you should mention that. From what I've read, the original name was duck tape, not duct tape, and it was made from cotton duck cloth that makes shoes stronger.
Fascinating, something new learned today too.

I have a PM2 and love the camera. I consider myself an expert user, shoot raw, try to expose to the right etc. The pm2 is super easy to use, I have programmed all buttons and use the scp for lesser used functions. Image quality is really good.

One disadvantage over my GH2 is the weaker UV filter on oly cameras. I had more purple issues, flare and fringing with my pana lenses (20mm and 7-14). I fixed this with a kodak wrattem 2A gel filter in the body.

I have always liked photography and took a class years ago with an old SLR 35mm ( even developed the film my self, was all black and white and FUN! ) but I have forget all I learned from that class and find my self wanting to get back in to it. So again thanks for all the info!
Just to confirm what a number of members have said: the E-PM2 is a very good choice. I loved mine. It is minimalist, strips down to the essential of these new cameras: the very good sensor and touch screen. And yes you can customise to enable user control. And it is a great value when you consider what you are getting for the minimal outlay, not only the camera but the excellent 40-150 Olympus tele zoom!

The one thing that I would like to try that the E-PM2 lacks is the new flip screen and because I gave my E-PM2 to my wife to replace her broken E-PL1, I am now purchasing an E-PL5.

Bob, regarding your statement above: you can still do b&w film photography! When i started with m43 buying the E-P1 four years ago, I wanted something that reminded me of film cameras and I was unaware then that film was still a viable option. Now I do both digital and film. In fact I am developing a roll of film today. Nothing like b&w rangefinder photography. If you are curious, check it out at http://www.rangefinderforum.com/

Yes, true, but wet and messy. As an alternative maybe develop RAWs with Corel AfterShot Pro and use their "film"......

Less waiting, even a "9 minute" development takes microseconds. :-)

Plenty of other software out there also simulates film types. Corel PaintShop Pro X5 Ultimate came with a "free" Nik Colour Efex Pro 3 as a plugin, and that nicely also plugs into my later PSP X6 32 bit version and that gives a huge range of film and other interesting adjustable filters.

No more need to darken the bathroom and stain the floor with nasty chemicals, though it was fun at the time.

Now, what to do with a freezer load of film?

Thanks for all the info. I went to Dan's which is a kinda local shop and bought it this weekend. I got a black one instead of silver but since I was able to look it over and have a local store to return it to it was worth it to me.

It will take me a bit of time to figure out the settings on this camera however :)

Once you have figured one out all the rest of the Olympus family are easy as they just add bits to the Custom Menu.

First you must turn on the SCP (Super Control Panel) and Custom Menus, my E-PL5 SCP help page offers info that works for all.

Next dig in the Custom Menus to set the camera the way you want it. I do not have an E-PM2 list, but the E-PL5 list is closest and may help explain a few things. Just a few little differences as the Mode dial is not on the E-PM2.

Then of course the MySets, my help page on MySets and Mode dial assignment is a help, but of course the last part about the Mode dial does not apply.

Have fun !

Oh yes, first pictures must be of your cat, that's compulsory around here. :-)

That SCP is really nice!!!

but the fn and rec button I read that I can set one of the to change the dial to myset options when held down/pressed, but I cant find that setting when I configure them, am I missing something?

Pages 71, 78 of the E-PM2 manual. Basically Menu -> Gears -> Button/Dial. Note, on page 70, it mentions you have to enable the custom menu option first before you can see it. I really would prefer Olympus to not target people who need to be babied and prevented from setting complex menu items. It is such a drag when getting a new camera, to go in and enable SCP, and the custom menu items, basically saying 'I am not an idiot'.

why does the Exif data not show my connected lens? am I missing something?
