Marketing Dance Tour Pictures

I shoot dance schools and don't make a cent from the concerts and competitions, but the end of year studio shoots I sell 800 images from 2 full days shooting . the parents including myself prefer the formal photos.

cheers don
I shoot both as well, and I do pretty well with both -- but my performance shots tend to be more popular and sell better. Although I have found that it varies from one studio to another.

And those that say you cannot sell the performance shots after the performance with an online gallery, my bank account would beg to differ. But it all comes to do how the online gallery is marketed to the parents during the show and then after. When it's presented as a big deal, (not "deal" as in savings but as in importance), I get tons of hits and sales. I've had more than a thousand unique visitors to my gallery in one day when it's marketed correctly, and of course, the studio has to be prominent and big enough (80-100 dancers, including the little ones).

I shoot both performances and costume portraits. But in most cases, esp with the little ones, you can not get this kind of excitement and emotion when you're shooting a costume portrait. Mom bought a 17x22, 8x10 and a number of other prints of this shot. This is just one example. I'm only posting this because a lot of people are saying that performance shots that are sold in an online gallery after the performance does not sell, and I completely disagree, and so does my bank account. It all comes down to your relationship with the dance school, and how they promote. They do a crappy job, I get crappy sales. They do an outstanding job and my sales are in the thousands.

I am the OP. Wow thanks for all the positive ideas! Really appreciate it. I am 70 yrs old and have been doing this for almost 50 yrs with an actual studio for 25yrs. I am a one man operation and at this point I just cannot invest in what would be needed to sell at the venues...however I will implement many of the ideas presented by everyone at the next 5 competitions. I sure as hell can't get less sales than the first one! Ok...General question...what is the overall purpose of using a company like Zenfolio if not to sell online? Am I using it incorrectly? Finally I may be leaving myself open to some negative stuff but here is my site info in case anyone wants to view my images and prices. To see pricing go through the ordering process without actually checking out.

Site: wilbur2981.zenfolio.com Gallery ID is: 21516

Everything was shoot with a Nikon D700 and a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR ll lens.

Don't be too tough on me guys! Guess I won't ever be going back to making dye transfer prints or hand coloring with Marshall Oils.

I find ron that for the time spent for the 20 or 30 in the past sold from the concerts it wasnt worth it so now i just process the ones i like and put them on the dance school site for promotion.

cheers don

a few from the past shot from the crowd, even though I shoot the whole dress rehearsal their is always some thing missing.

Dance school vs dance competition. HUGE difference!! Trust me. Online sales at competitions DO NOT SELL. The OP is a perfect example. My experience has taught me the same.

Don't know if you were testing us, but that ID didn't work for me
Right, didn't work for me either. This is what I was saying about your website. Parents and dancers don't have a lot of patience, needs to have easy accessibility. All your galleries are hidden, so people have nowhere to go.
