A contentious topic, street photography, and feel free to tear into them. Three recent images up for genuine C&C. Thanks, Folks!

Try including either your EXIF data or tell what body, ISO, lens, speed, aperture, EV compensation, etc. you use, and whether you shot handheld, tripod, or monopod.

Discuss what lighting situation you were in and what you were trying to capture. Any problems YOU see, that you'd like to get C&C upon? Did you do something in post that you'd like help with?

Hopefully, all that will make feedback easier, and you will get some.

Hi EYeye, thanks for responding.

I don't think when people exhibit photos, they include EXIF with them. I was interested in people's impressions, particularly from those who shoot or appreciate street images (if you check my webpage you will see quite a few of them), and I guess there are either not many here who do or they simply didn't resonate.

In case you care, #1 &2 were shot with Zeiss Apo-Sonnar 135 on D600 at ISO 6400 pretty much wide open and #3 was shot with Leica Elmarit-R E60 28mm on Sony NEX-5n via Metabones Speedbooster.

Unfortunately Daniel74, many people here are not really interested in taking photographs.

Their primary concern is their equipment; their lovely shiny, low noise, High IQ, rapid focusing, fast frame-rate, clean sensor, equipment.

Woe betide anyone who actually uses the camera for anything other than producing test shots.

You may be better off in a more aesthetically inclined user group.

I love street photography, but usually ignore such threads on here as so many people think any photo taken on the street is 'street'. Good to see that at least two of your three tick the right box for me.

I like the content in this. While there's nothing wrong with the tint, it's not my taste, I tend to like black and white to be black and white. The shadows are very black, a bit of detail in there wouldn't hurt. I don't see this one as a stand alone image, but a good one in a set.

The colour has a nice quality about it, though in this case I definitely find it too dark. Enjoyable content, but I'm having to work too hard to see it.

This one isn't working for me. The content isn't resonating in any way. Maybe I'm missing something?

I had a look through your gallery - some good stuff in there. Your portrait section is the stand out, followed by your street images.

Much appreciated, John. This is what I was looking for.

Ideally it's great to know why certain images resonate with people and others don't and what people see in the image. But in reality I got next to no feedback on this forum.

Thank you for checking out my webpage too. I looked at yours and appreciated the warmth and the natural expression of your wedding photos. The people actually look like their are relaxed and enjoying themselves! Which is a rare thing for wedding photos. Bravo!

Hi,

I generally agree with the comments made so far.

No.1 Really like how its so contrasty, Yes a bit of detail in the shadows would be nice but either way it doesn't detract from the great expression of the old woman. I like the interaction and am wondering on earth they're talking about..

No.2. Yeah really love the colours, I feel like it captures what you felt rather than what you necessarily saw. It doesn't grab me in any particular way but it does set a nice mood through your choice of light/colour rendering.

No.3 Is that Richmond station?

I like them. 1 is alil too contrasty. 2 is really cool it puts me there. The lighting is nice for night shot. I miss those days. 3 I like the composition. Im no pro.

No takers, then? I thought there must be experienced people hanging around who could give a newb a hand or at least share their impressions?

Either way... I might migrate to a more photo-oriented forum.

This is generally gear talk in this forum...at least my observation and I believe the intent of the site's organization. Maybe try one of the photography forums...documentary and street photography for example.

The first and the second pictures are very good and tell a story. I see an old lady with a nice expression talking to 2 young girls. Two generation of difference are shown in an effective way.
Exif data are not relevant. The second picture is of the same quality.
Well done, this type of documentary pictures impress me much more than the most beautiful landscape pictures.

I'm just going to present a general thought about my take on current street photography - for me there has to be a purpose and intent as to "why" and "what for" of an image taken on the street. Is street photography just a hobby? It is all well and good to come away with some image of interest, but isn't that type of shooting supposed to be making a statement of some sort - what are you trying to tell us, your viewers?

This is not critical of your work, but I often wonder when I'm out wandering the streets - why am I taking this; what purpose will it serve? Most often I put the camera down. Don't mean to take away from your good work but I don't know, just my take...

But I love the D610 and plan on getting one.

Cheers

First image has too much PP for my taste.

Second image is great but the crooked horizon bothers me.

Third image has lovely colors and is my favorite.

Nice work!

I think the 2nd and 3rd photos are great, there's something about the first photo that reminds me of the NYC subway's of the 70's.. :-) Nice webpage...

Thank you very much, Folks, for proving me wrong. I really appreciate all this feedback!

Ansel, I agree that this forum is mainly gear focused and as much as I love gear (especially good glass) and get very bored discussing all this stuff and especially arguing over it. But horses for courses...

Kaktus, the old lady was a character alright. She was travelling on the train after midnight along with all the teenagers coming home after their partying with her trolley full of sweets and snacks. Very keen to engage in conversation she was. Old folks are often very lonely.

And yes, #3 is Richmond I believe! Shot through the train window.

Thank you Mr Picky. These are a few shots from the last week, I am not offering them as some sort of masterpieces. Just putting them out there to gauge people's reaction.

Scokill, you are right that that's how it seems to work except for the Leica forum which is more image focused. I have joined Documentary and Street forum to see if I get more feedback there.

Jenella, thanks, mate!

Geff, thank you too! Some folks reckon it is too contrasty (#1). I will try a few more versions - might have to tone down the highlights - will see!

Gotompoes, thank you for seeing the stories. It is hard to express in words what kind of street scenes attract me, best to see the pics on my website, I guess!

Corona, thank you for checking the website - if you like the FB page, you will get the updates, or I think you can also subscribe to the blog.

chkproductions, broadly speaking I agree. But on the other hand we have to be true to our muse - and take the sort of photographs we like. Sometimes, maybe most of the time, we are not going to be able to say exactly why.

Retzius, thank you, Sir. I will try to reprocess them and see it I like it better. Appreciate the honest feedback!

Lickity, many thanks for commenting and for checking out the webpage!

I am a bit traditional about "street" photography. I prefer it in black and white - color really adds little to this genre and often detracts from the message the photographer is trying to say. In street photography one is trying to send a message through the subjects on the street. Sometimes they are posed but most often not.

When I print images I have taken on the street I normally print in a cool tone black and white - similar to selenium toned prints of the darkroom days - to generate a cool tone.

You might want to take a look at the wonderful book "Dream Street" by W. Eugene Smith. Smith is arguably one of the best street photographers of all time - to some point being one of the developers of the art form. Many of his images are classics.

I have some street shots in my phase in a few galleries. However, I must admit I spend a lot more time perfecting my prints than I do images for posting on the web.

Daniel- These are great street shots, well composed and I like the processing of each one.

Well done!
