Making it easy for Canon: What the M3 should be.

Of course if Canon gives you all these cool retro features (and everything else you want) you'll be looking at a cool $2000 camera that none of you will buy. (See Nikon Df)

been hashed out dozens of times.. but like many here i hope canon doesn't start looking at fuji unless its to learn from its mistakes…great camera yes but nothing like what the evolution of the M should be.. leica is managing a mirror less form factor in the right size with evf and strong controls….

CANON EOS M

We Like:

the form factor/size

quality ofexisting lenses

IQ

Build quality

We Want

dual pixel/AF

fast af

more lenses possible inclusive of some fast "L" like quality although the M lenses rock.

evf

Maybe tilt scree

maybe more ergonomics in line with a dslr, wheels as options to touch screen

reasonable pricing under $1000

eazy peasy
yeah i'm not sure about the EVF to be honest. with the diminutive size of the M having an EVF on that just doesn't seem to go to well with it. maybe as an addon?

Let's face it .. the M right now is really neck and neck with the smallest APS-C ILC out there which is the Sony C3

What i'd like .. to add/mod to your list a bit.

- Remote Tethering via USB like all other Canon EOS bodies.
- on board flash / commander
- tilt screen over EVF (See powershot N100 screen - without the backfacing camera though )
- wifi / NFC
- faster FPS
- focus peaking

Canon should concentrate on making a "better but still affordable" version of the M, something that may actually sell.

(The Fujifilm X-T1 is $1699 including lens.)

another one for Canon to aim at?

Much cheaper than a Fuji X-T1 too.

Introductory price looks pretty competitive, and sure to fall to even lower street prices.

Minus some of the quibbles pointed out by the reviewer plus the Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor, this is what the M3 should be:

This, right here.

I really hope Canon won't mess this up.
It is called "Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera".

SL1 has the same size and a bit lighter. SL1 has optical viewfinder, not electronic. Fuji doesn't have a touchscreen. What Fuji has that SL1 does not have?

X-T1 has almost double weight and size comparing with M. Exactly double than M2.
Given the manual control dials, giant viewfinder, build quality and superior sensor, I'd say the SL1 is not really an equivalent.

I'll take the $100 fisheye and 14-42 super slim pancake zoom they just announced over a new body. Those look great.

Funny their 25mm f1.8 costs 2x the MSRP and 4x the street price of the 22mm f2.

Can you believe that guy.

What does Fuji have what the SL1 does not have......................................
  • good sensor(not the 5 your old recycled piece of crap)
  • Huge EVF (not the tiny optical pinhole)
  • 4 or 5 control dials (just 1 in an pretty awkward position
  • Weather sealed metal body(crappy plastic fantastic build)

An addon means you can not use an viewfinder and a flash in most cases. Rangefinder style is a good hybrid but it will become larger. Canon can take a look at the GX7 which also houses some dials and an popup flash in the top plate

Yeah if you don't mount a lens. Have you seen the 18-55 compared to the latest powerzooms.

It's close to 3 times the size of the sony lens.

The specifications tell a different story about that huge EVF. The SL1 has an OFV with a magnification factor of .87x. The EVF in the Fuji has a magnification factor of .77x. The DSLR wins here.

How does Canon continue to sell cameras with 5 year old crappy sensors? Is the buying public that stupid that they continue to buy technology that is so far out of date compared to the competition? That doesn't make any sense at all. There are too many informed buyers for that to be the case. The reality is that Canon's sensors, regardless of design age, continue to hold their own against the other options.

For way more than double the price of the SL1, the Fuji certainly better have a more solid body.

Check out the Leica C i bought one recently and have fallen in love with it mostly because its even smaller then the M, 28-200 f2-5.9 has evf and flash and leica processor… not as versatile as the M will be as lenses are released but certainly proves you can put more ergonomic/manual not touch screen control as an option as well as a eve in something very small…The m has replaced my slr when ever possible, and the leica has now replaced my M as my everyday carry around…truly pocketable and quite impressive.

mp
How usable is an EVF screen resolution of 200K?

A Canon equivalent of the Sony A7R !!!

then it's not diminutive if it goes the route of the GX series. which was the point of my comment. either by hump or do the side.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 is 17% (17.7 mm) wider and 8% (5.5 mm) taller than Canon EOS M2.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 is 73% (23 mm) thicker than Canon EOS M2.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 [402 g] weights 47% (128 grams) more than Canon EOS M2 [274 g]

and that's with a much smaller lens mount and related sensor size.
Let's face it .. the M right now is really neck and neck with the smallest APS-C ILC out there which is the Sony C3

what sony are you talking about? the E mount 18-55? no it isnt'. or are you comparing it to the horribly optically compromised 16-50 pancake?

not to mention the fact that the point still stands the body is one of the more compact APS-C bodies out there, and i doubt canon wants to change that.

Not usable.and it's just an overpriced Panasonic lf1 with a leica badge. The compact size with good zoom fast lens make the original a very good competitor to the s120.
