Is this lens sharp or what?

Based on the above I think that you could take "Is this lens sharp or what?" and drop the "or what" and move the "is" over a couple of words. Must have been the best day ever in the Pany factory and your particular camera was twiced blessed or something.

Impressive for sure.

Haha...I bought enough of camera's , over the years, from Panasonic...so maybe they send me the cream of the crop, with the FZ200 :)

Hope they dont find out I sold their GH2 and 2 lenses, shortly after buying the FZ200.

Almost bought the 100 to 300mm lens, for around the same price, lol.

All these shots at f2.8 ,too.

It looks good but there's some tricks here, this isn't a full sized image from the camera, and there is most definitely some unnatural background blur going on here
Yes indeed. This shot was taken in a zoo exhibit, and the king vulture was only about a foot away from the painted wall behing him.

So I blurred the background, to draw attention away from the distracting wall, and onto the subject.

As you can see, I'm not too good at it, lol. FastStone has a more primitive blur tool, than other software.

..I know I've cause a stir here, but, there is no need for these threads. I love the shot's, I just personally am not a fan of small sensor high zoom cameras. Let's see the real bokeh before the gausian blur?
No stir caused...

no need for these threads? Why?

I simply posted a question, with examples.

It seems I'm not alone in thinking the lens is really sharp.

Purpose served. It was also a chance to share some photo's.

This thread is specifically about the sharpness (at f2.8) of the fz200. Forgot to add the f2.8 in there.

Its not about bokeh...not sure why that came up.

I posed a question for any to answer, if they chose to...basically, is this lens sharp :-)

Sensor size, ability to get shallow DOF , noise, etc could be better for another thread...but then again i welcome your comments.

To be honest, there are quite a few shortcomings/ compromises this camera has...but the lens doesnt seem to be one of them. Ive never seen this amount of detail from a FZ before.

It was enough to cause me NOT to buy the 100 to 300mm lens, for my GH2, and buy the whole FZ200.

I think I made the right choice.

Certainly ..Quite sharp for 2.8 aperture. Great work ANAYV..! IMHO, the reason is - the perfect combo- Leica+ANAYV..!
Thanks for demonstrating a good enough reason for me to buy this camera instead of a big zoom for my DSLR.. In any case, I can not offord a 2.8 super zoom costing many times that of FZ200 . So FZ200 is a boon for me and you are one among the many that made my decision making easier.

............ the subject matter in most of the images fills a good portion of the frame. When you have all those pixels zoomed in on a single subject it`s not unusual to find good detail and sharpness.

That said I enjoyed looking at them. I`ve seen some African safari shots taken with this camera up against a Canon dslr with a costly zoom (same safari) and the Panosonic shots were as good or better .
Thanks Veducci!

Cameras with such a zoom range, like the FZ200, are meant to have subject filling the frame.

I have a LX7 for scenics and landscapes, used mostly at the 24mm end, and thr FZ200 mostly for the 300mm plus range.

They're excellent photos and the fact they're coming out of that camera is even more impressive. I should leave it at that. I am impressed... I Just don't love super zooms.
Thanks, Lumixdude!
Years ago, if one said that Panasonic would put out a camera with twice the zoom range as my then FZ10, keep it at a constant f2.8, and that optically it would be even better than the fz10, I would never have believed it.
Seeing is believing, lol.

These are superb shots ANAYV. I simply can't see how you could expect to get better quality images out of other bridge camera of this ilk. These are as good as it can get and that's not a backhanded compliment, it is the highest compliment I can give. As I said - superb.

ANAYV..the only thing I could say is WOW!! Those are SHARP. I know the FZ200 is one great camera and have a sharp lens but the way you PP (if you do some PP) even makes the camera does wonders. I guess you shot these in raw? What software do you use for PP and raw conversion. Every time I see your photos, there's the WOW factor in all of them. Keep posting :)

Thanks so much, Rik !

I do Post Process my images.

These days I use FastStone image viewer.Few minutes per image.

I tone down the processing in camera, and enhance later, with FastStone.

I adjust shadow/highlight, contrast, saturation and sharpness, usually in that order.

I sometimes also use the Clone tool, and remove any distracting dots, litter, etc, when shooting at a zoo.

Also , at times will use blur setting to blur distracting background.

I think most of these were shot jpeg. Two might of been RAW...BUT I edited from the 2.5MP small image, FastStone displays, so it's really not a true RAW processing . Don't recommend doing this.

Thanks ANAYV. That made me think about my so called workflow. PP is one of the most overlooked aspect in photography, just like the old dark room days. I still remember the WYSWYG factor. I spent countless times behind the scene (the darkroom) trying to get that extra WOW factor on my photos. Thank you again and keep 'em coming. I know there are of us that never gets tired viewing your photos.
Thanks so much, RiK !

Wow! Incredible sharp images!

Photographs like these are the reason why I haven´t decided to "upgrade" to DSLRs. Nothing can beat these cameras in terms of use and convinience. I know what it is like to lug arond some heavy gear and glass when travelling.

Happy Shooting and Keep Posting!!!

Many photographers think that if they buy a better camera, they will be able to make better photographs.A camera will do nothing for you if there is nothing in your head or in your heart. Arnold Newman
Thanks!

Lens is impressively sharp, especially given these are all taken at f2.8

These ARE stunning images. Doesn't matter on what they were taken or what processing used....I think most would be very happy with them.

Funnily enough, I have for years been in quest of the holy grail...a small camera that will do all I want especially in low light, with fast moving subjects.

I purchased a Panasonic DMC-GF5 kit with standard and telephoto lenses to use instead of my FF Nikon DSLR and others. Sadly, I got nothing even close, with that Panasonic combination, to the wonderful images here and can usually get what I want being reasonable in photoshop.

However, it was a massive disappointment (and I am a Panasonic fan).

I sold the camera etc and reinvested on a Nikon one lens does all solution (28-300) which I put on my D700 and D300.

Using the D700, it meant that because of its high iso capabilities, I was able to shoot almost whatever and wherever....poor light in theatre etc with movement on stage. Of course that lens is not the best Nikon by a long way, but for me it is delivering the range, on one body etc.

However, I still hanker for that small lightweight alternative......it seems nothing yet comes close to the FZ200.....I now wish I had bought that instead of the 4/3 kit....I suspect the FZ200 may deliver better results, all in one, with no lens changing....I would be happily posting in this great forum.

So once again fabulous shots...all credit to you....would love to see this camera do the same in really poor light etc where iso has to be 3200 etc....when Panasonic come up with that.....anyone want to buy a load of Nikon gear...!!!
Best wishes and thanks for sharing your great captures....Ray

Hi Anayv,

Was just admiring your work again. My father used to keep Peacocks at our farm when I was a kid so I grew up with these birds roaming around the farm. Free for the most part. I couldn't do this today. Where I live has too many residential homes. I still live on my Dads 50 acres but it is surrounded by homes. Back in the 70's it was all farms.

Outstanding images. These forums spend hours discussing which camera is best. I suspect in their own way most are pretty good with some very good or even outstanding. The main factor is the photographer. Here we clearly have a very good photographer with an outstanding camera. Would the images have been better with a dslr or mirror less camera? I doubt it, certainly not to the extent that most people would notice. May be they are better in low light although the new bsi-cmos sensors and processors can do a good job in low light these days.

Well done.
Thanks Peter!

These are fantastic shots, but Anayv is the yardstick by which zoo shots should be measured regardless of the camera he uses. He has always learned to get the best out of whatever tool he uses, and utilize it to way beyond the average user.

I'm off to buy a hat so I can take it off before you Anayv.

Wow, such nice comments, Dov!

Thanks!

But I'm the one who should be taking his hat off to You, Dov!

Look how well you do , with any camera you have owned!

More importantly, look at the skill you have, and a great eye for compositions....how you can catch the right moment...or creatively isolate certain objects within the scene you are shooting.

Weather it be a portrait, a scenic landscape, or candid shots, you excell at them all.

Combine that with the kind and compassionate soul you are and........

Well....

I take off many hats, to you , Dov.

What colors do you like?

At least one of them will be a B&W. :-)

Be Blessed !
