I may be the only one in these forums who thinks this way, but I'm getting tired of more and more cameras getting smaller and smaller. I have average-sized hands for an adult male, so I would think that a few others out there share my opinon.

First, let me say that I prefer digicams over DSLRs because they are smaller, lighter, and draw less attention when you want to shoot candids. That said, I think we're starting to go a little too far.

For example, my current Fuji digicam feels right in my hands ... but it's a few years old now and I am becoming painfully aware that newer cameras are capable of FAR superior performance. I'm now trying to decide on my next camera. Of all the current Nikon offerings that I've messed with, the Coolpix 4500 is the only one that feels PERFECT in my hands. The 5000 is almost perfect, but I have to add the MB-E5000 battery pack to make it perfect ... which then adds size and weight and makes the camera more obvious around my neck. Likewise, the 5700 almost feels perfect in my hands, but requires the MB-E5700 which causes the same problems. I won't even mention the 3100, which is so small I almost had a stroke in the store when I saw it.

I've picked up a variety of other cameras from other manufacturers that are even smaller.

What is going on? How am I supposed to enjoy taking pictures if I can hardly hold the stinking camera? I understand the novelty of having a super-small camera, but what's the point? Do you want to impress your friends with a toy that can fit on a key chain, or do you want to take pictures?

Sorry for the rant. I've been suffering from insomnia over the past few days and REALLY need some sleep. Anyway. I hope the upcoming 5400 feels nice in my hands ... and I hope Nikon doesn't forget that people actually need to HOLD their cameras.

Gee, I wonder what kind of cell phone you have?

Yes, I agree. There's a threshold there which were getting very close to or in some cases, we've passed.

I recently got a 4500 and have had a 990 for 3+ years. The smaller layout is nice for pocket-stuffing but I am really struggling with holding the camera. I have moderately large hands, e.g. I can hold a basketball with one hand without too much trouble.

The 4500 just isn't large enough for a good grip sometimes. Frequent use of a cat-collar hand strap helps a little.

I really wish they made an add on grip for the 4500 like they do for the 5000. It's on my list of things to experiment with sometime in the basement shop.

I understand your pain, and I agree with it. I just bought (today in fact, have to take it out of the box soon) a CP5000. I also bought the battery pack/grip as well. 50% of my reason for buying it was simply to increase the overall size/weight and gripability of the camera. I am kind of suprised that someone has not started makeing molded attachable-via-tripod-socket grips for some of these two fingered wonders.

A least the CP5400 is a much better shape than the CP5000 which is too narrow and tall!

The small ones have their place as fashion accessories!

Its terrible how the small ones seem to have been designed for one handed operation... the lenses are too far to one side.

I still have some affection for my Mamiya c220! And as to what mobile phone?.........................a brick.

Totally agree ! Just exchanged the CP4300 with its fake brushed metal plastic and toy camera looks for the CP4500 - size definately does matter !

I've never had that much trouble holding an SLR steady, good sharp images even at 1/15sec with a 28mm lens but the smaller cameras are harder to hold in your hands and the small size and weight means they react quicker to the least little hand tremor. Since I do have shaky hands anyway I even have trouble with my 995 so I try to brace it on something as much as I can.

Maybe we just need to put those little cameras on a large Steadicam rig, that wouldn't make them too obvious would it?

Its nice to see that Im not the only one who has this complaint. Im waiting for the day when cameras are so small that they can be classified as invisable. Where can the manufacturers go from there? I like a camera that has size and weight. Love my Nikkormats.

I'm with you, RB. I've begun to think that when I finally upgrade my cp995, I may have to move to a different brand (horrors) just so I find a camera I can hold on to, and an LCD I can see! No way I can live with a 1.5" LCD.

I wanted to sell my 995 to one of my wifes colleagues. They didn't want it... too BIG!

I too wonder why everything has to be smaller and smaller. Modern GSM phones have become so small that I sometimes think those who use them not only listen but also talk through their ears.

Ain't it a great thing that there's an entire range of good cameras from the very small 3.2 megapixel, 3x zoom Pentax Optio S (3/4 inch thick and smaller than a credit card) to very large digital SLRs?

There's plenty to fit your hands; I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it :)

PS. I have the Optio S as my second camera; it slips in your pocket and you don't even know it's there. I've been able to get pictures I would have missed because I didn't have the 5700 with.

I'm 6'3", with hands to match, and I find the 4500 just right. Of course, I frequently take shots with it out at arms length, reaching out across the flowers to get just the right shot.

I like the fact that it's light enough for me to hold like that with just my thumb on the back and my middle and ring fingers on the front (though the ring finger is hardly involved).

When I shoot candids, I hold it at waist level, often using both hands and pulling it up tight against my belly (no small thing).

This whole thing reminds me of the M-14 vs. M-16 debate. I found the weight of the M-14 (and the M-1 before it) caused me to shake in unsupported positions, and I never fired better than Marksman. Then the M-16 came along, and suddenly I was firing Expert, because I could hold it steady (and it was a lot easier to carry). The CP 4500 is my M-16. (Yeah, I'm retired Army.)

...of size, it's interesting to note that Pentax released the Optio 33L along with the Optio S. These cameras have almost exactly the same specifcations, but the 33L has some advantages over the S, namely: CF card, AA batteries, LCD that can be flipped out and rotated. Yet the 33L has hardly received a mention anywhere. Why not? Size.

Yes, there are some sorry images by the 33L at Steve's, but the images from the S are even worse. Given the much larger lense, I am fairly certain that the 33L is able to do better than the S.

Pentax struck gold with the S. Much publicity and a probably a handsome revenue. But it's all show biz - any connection with the issue of photography is purely incidental.

My own take on this is as follows. Many of us would like to have a good shirt pocket camera, BUT PLEASE USE THE ENTIRE SHIRT POCKET. If reviewers and other trend setters could latch on to that idea, we might have a saner market in the sub-compact sector.
