Canon GX 1 or G16 for travel to replace original RebelXT ?

--thank you for sharing your photos! For me, the portability of the G16 won out and I have been spending a few days playing with it and so far am very happy with the IQ it provides. For my uses, it was the right move for this trip.

Carole - I'm pleased you're pleased. I'll probably be following soon and getting a G16 myself, although I'll take a look at a new Panasonic before a final decision.

I think you made the right choice getting the G16. Like one person said, what about lensrentals.com & say the SL-1 & 1 short zoom? Just a thought.

I am glad it is working out and you found something you are happy with. I don't recall if you said before, but when do you leave to go to Japan? I wish you the best on your trip. Japan is loaded with camera stores so if worse comes to worse while you are there and need to get something it is easy. Canon cameras allow you to change the menus to English (I bought my G15 in Japan) and the other camera companies do too EXCEPT Sony and Panasonic so don't buy one of their cameras in Japan. The US dollar/yen exchange rate is also pretty good now compared to recent years. In the big cities you can usually find a big Bic Camera, Yodobashi Camera, etc. I suggest that you at least go in to look around. You can handle the cameras without anyone hovering over you so it is great. Take a look at this post I made with lots of photos inside of a Tokyo camera store:

"It's both really."

Matter of varying opinions.

"It's a tool for me, no bias about it, the best tool for what I shoot on most occasions."

An loved or hated tool. It can be very good or very bad depending on the situation. You can say i have my Dslr. But what if you can only afford 1 camera. Then it might not be that good.
Then you probably can't afford the better lenses for your DSLR - win for a camera like the G1X.
It has around 11 stops of DR, more than enough for most applications and if not I use graduated ND filters on it, problem solved.

Isn't that a pathetic value these days that even 1/1.7 inch compacts reach.
Not when you have 14 bit raw (and automatic bracketing), which most DSLR's don't have.
"For me yes, it's a very capable camera."

Here we agree the best or second best camera in it's class. The other is the new Olympus stylus 1
Different type of camera, but an interesting option for sure.
"There is the SX50 but I prefer the faster lens and better evf on the FZ200. I feel the FZ200 has a better balance of features, it doesn't feel crippled in any way."

You don't want small apertures on these dense small sensors.
Nope, the constant F2.8 is a real boon.
Here you go, not sure why the link has to be so long, Flickr tinkering again.

Thanks for the link. The exif shows the photographer knew his stuff. he used an wide angle for it's composition and depth of field. He also used an 1/1250th shutter to freeze the action.
Of course, not difficult to do for an enthusiast.
He even nailed the timing perfectly. Very good skill on his behalve. Nothing really showing for the G1X here. He had no need for Quick AF.
See above.
now the macro's

Well the lens seems to hold sharpness very well with accesoires. I give you this one, some lenses don't really do perform well with macro accesoires. The Oly 45mm F1.8 for example. So this is pretty impressive.
With a close up lens macro is not a problem, the Canon 250D and 500D are both excellent and inexpensive lenses of this type, no light loss either.
I post process my pictures, sometimes a lot, you can't beat a decent full frame sensor for that. If I want the absolute best quality that's the camera I'll use. That and for shallow dof, which again is best on a larger sensor. For much of what I shoot the G1X is more than enough and I'm most likely to have it with me.

With post process i do not agree. Some Apsc sensors have come very close in this regard. With depth of field well The Fujifilm is the only one that comes close enough if it's sharp wide open. No one knows that yet. So depth of field is an win for fullframe indeed.
The G1X has 14 bit raw, it makes a difference.

this is a heavy post process. the sky was completely blown out.

K30 with cheapskate samyang fisheye.
Nice shot though a little underexposed for my taste, many quality images owe little to the camera and "image quality" and everything to the subject and composition/lighting etc.
If you don't mind swapping lenses, I've missed many shots doing that. The G1X means I don't have to. There is no 28-112mm F2.8-5.8 lens in the CSC world and lenses like the Olympus 12-50mm don't cut it in lower light unless you use flash. The Panasonic 14-140mm is very sharp at certain focal lengths but is inconsistent and slower at the wide end.

The Olympus is only 1/3rd stop slower at all ranges. It's very soft at the long end though. However it does do great Macro. The Pana 14-140 is an lens with double the range. So that kinda explains the inconsistent nature. Don't know any 10X zoom that is very good. The Pana is already 1 of the best in that category.
Yes, I've seen some nice macro stuff with the 12-50mm, use a flash and any lens looks a lot better. The 14-140mm MK1 I had was eye-wateringly sharp at certain focal lengths, as sharp as most primes, but it definitely faded after 100mm, I did get some nice shots with it though. It was always extremely quick to focus as it is stepless.

It dawned on me that if a replacement for the G1X comes out before my October trip to Japan, maybe I can buy the new one there for a good price. If the focus speed and macro issues are resolved I could probably live with the larger size. Then 'give' the G16 to my husband. Just a thought.
