Dell U2414H or P2414H vs U2412M

Anyone know anything about how these newer Dell monitors stack up for photo/video editing use against the older UltraSharp? I see they are 1920 x 1080 vs 1920 x 1200 – is that a deal killer by itself or is there anything redeeming about any newer tech they might employ?

The 27” P Series is 1080 too, but comes in at a very reasonable price…. That U2414H claims 96% sRGB (but no DVI connectors – only HDMI).

I’m just about worn out with researching at the moment. If anyone has any input – feel free to chime in.

Here is a review of the P2414H monitor. It appears the P model has been upgraded to an IPS screen making them suitable for photo editing. I prefer the 1920x1200 models to the 1920x1080, just because they offer a little more vertical height for editing portrait oriented images. That is about the only advantage.

I also prefer 1920x1200 and the u2412m fits the bill. It also calibrates well with colormunki.

It’s the monitor that I’ve been eying that is more within reasonable budget, but I was just curious if any of these newer releases gave a reason to hold off and see how they rank.

Even with less resolution, the P2414H does not suffer from low frequency PWM like the U2412M does.

The P2414H looks OK, now need a review of the U2414H, TFT Central will do soon.

They've fixed the PWM problem with the u2412m.

How is this addressed btw? Is it some sort of ‘firmware’ update or something? On a monitor?

I have my primary monitor, a U2412M, set at 33% Brightness.

When I put up a white screen and use a smartphone to sample video and wave my hands in front of the screen I see what is shown in some videos - horizontal lines (very faint) and the stroboscope effect when my hands wave in front of the screen.

I also have a 2209WA (CCFL back light) and a new S2240L (LED back light at 48%) sitting on the same desktop.

I notice no flicker, get no headaches, have no burning eyes. I sit in front of these monitors for 8+ hours a day, many days 12+ hours.

Probably hardware. Even if it is controlled by firmware, there's no way to update it.

But only 1080p vertically, when the U2412H is 1200p and the same price.

Update to my question: I pulled the trigger on the U2412M while on sale and after the apparent consensus of opinion declaring it the pick. I've been sick with swine flu and have really used it much, but as I feared originally when looking into IPS Monitors - the improvement over my old TP monitor seems more subtle than I might have hoped for. Is it better? Yes! Does it blow me away how much better? Not really.

I might imagine if I get it calibrated that the improvement to my image editing in Lightroom will be noticeable though. I was reviewing a few old edits of RAW files that I thought just looked a little too saturated by preference on the old monitor that look gosh awful on the new Dell lol.

I can't imagine actually using 30% brightness that I keep seeng recommended though - wow, that seems way too dark!

Stand in front of the monitor, squat down, then stand up. You'll see that brightness changes a lot with TN monitors, and very little with IPS monitors. This makes TN monitors, even when calibrated, a bit problematic when working with images.

TN - oops! It is better. It's just not jaw dropping better IMHO. My TN panel isn't anything special, but not the cheapest either though and maybe that plays a role. This was why I was concerned not getting a wide gamut monitor would be a nominal improvement initially.

Im sure I will grow to appreciate it more as I use it. I jumped to a plasma screen television from a LCD that was stolen last year and was just blown away by the difference. This by comparison is a very very subtle improvement.

But I just ordered a 2412, which is 16:10 (1200p vertically) for exactly the same price (in the UK) as the 2414.
I must say I like the slim bezel on the 2414 though...

U2412M? That's a good graphics monitor too for the price, but it is an older model (from 2011) and the U2414H seems to have the edge on several specs plus the factory calibration that the U2412M lacks. The only thing where the 2412 is better is screen size/aspect. I'm not surprised these monitors have similar price.

Dells seems to have improved quality / QC of their graphics monitors a bit. In this price class it is a major advantage if the monitor has decent factory calibration; adding a calibrator will increase the cost a lot (relatively) and no longer seems really necessary.
