Title says it all. What is the consensus on highest quality native lens for the Nex system, regardless of focal length.

I have my reasons for asking, but don't want to poison opinions by sharing at first.

The two Zeiss Touits 32/1.8 & 12/2.8 look pretty good from what I can see in the sample images

Don't have either of them myself, sadly

Without a doubt, when assessing resolution and IQ the FE55 is the best lens ever made for the NEX and is second to only the $4000 Zeiss Otus. It's an insanely good lens.

There is some variance (as always) between copies.

The 2.8/20 mm lens - small and handy and light weight and superb angle of view completely in accord with my way of observing the world. This lens is splendid!

Oh - probably misinterpreted the question. Best or sharpest lens? :-P

For APS-C, if you go by DXOMark ratings, it's the SEL50F18.

When DXO finally gets around to testing the FE55 it will trounce the OSS 50. The difference is night and day.

Curious that noone has mentioned the 24mm 1.8 Zeiss for Nex. It seems to always pop up here on the forums as THE lens for Nex (I purposely put Nex here as its an APS-C wheras the A7/R is FF).

The sharpest lens I have is the SEL50F18, although the SEL24F18Z is pretty close.

"Best" and "sharpest" aren't always the same, but I would rate the ones I've used in this order - it's all about expectations in my view:

1) FE 55/1.8Z - easily the best

2) E 35/1.8 OSS - most versatile APS-C lens and my favorite before the Zeiss came along. Still a near permanent fixture on my 5N even now.

3) Sigma 30/2.8 - sharper than the E 35/1.8 but without OSS and a stop slower, just lacks the same utility as the other but there's nothing negative to say about this lens

4) Sigma 19/2.8 - great affordable wide angle, the best introduction to WA shooting on the NEX hands down

5) E 50/1.8 OSS - just all round great IQ, but probably the biggest focus hunter of all my lenses

6) E 18-200 LE - has a bad reputation here but I like it. Plenty sharp, very lightweight for a superzoom, and good build quality and reliably effective OSS. This is the lens I bring for one-size-fits-all travel like business trips

7) FE 28-70 - a very acceptable kit lens, but nothing to write home about. Very impressive around f/8 in my view, but soft corners at lower apertures make it difficult to get consistent results. Haven't decided yet if it will replace the 18-200LE on business trips or whether I'll stick the LE on the A7 and shoot in crop mode

8) E 18-55 OSS - the first lens I used on NEX, and it is great for its price

9) E 16/2.8 - decent little performer but yes, the corners are smeared from digital correction which defeats the purpose of most WA photography

Obviously I haven't used the newer f4 zooms as well as the APS-C Zeiss offerings (which I always found too expensive to justify the price), so I'm sure they probably fit in the top half of that list but oh well, now enjoying FF it's unlikely I'll ever get them.

The one you can afford and matches the field of view/aperture you need.

Your question is much too vague. I have no idea what your measure of quality means.

I think this is probably the sharpest overall lens for the A7 or A7r.
5) E 50/1.8 OSS - just all round great IQ, but probably the biggest focus hunter of all my lenses
Agree with that :)
9) E 16/2.8 - decent little performer but yes, the corners are smeared from digital correction which defeats the purpose of most WA photography
The corners are smeared because it is a cruddy lens, this lens is optically corrected, not digital.

If you go by DxO ratings, in order by memory.

1- E50/1.8

2- E35/1.8

3- Zeiss 24

4- E20

5- E10-18

6- E30 macro

FE lenses. But not native NEX E lenses.

Once again, FE lenses are not NATIVE E lenses.

...and should be a stellar performer on APSC NEX also.

also agree - probably the best APSC lens I own. I've tried it on my A7R in crop mode and it does a decent job there too.
9) E 16/2.8 - decent little performer but yes, the corners are smeared from digital correction which defeats the purpose of most WA photography
The corners are smeared because it is a cruddy lens, this lens is optically corrected, not digital.
I must have a better than average copy of this lens as I've been generally happy with the results (though don't shoot it often). When the weather gets a bit better, I'll have to try it out on my NEX 7 against my OM24mmf2.8 on the A7R - something to look forward to ;-)

I agree with Eric 101 %: the best lens always is the one that is on the camera when a wonderful picture comes into view. All one has to do is compose with what is on the camera and a good picture shows up in LR.
