Someone at another site, which I can't link to for some reason, or even type the name of (fentax porums) has posted some sample images from the 42.5/1.2.

Also a shot next to the 75/1.8 to show the size. Looks like its about the same size as the Oly 12-40/2.8.

Nice!

How much will it cost?
No idea, I've seen prices rumored anywhere from $1000 to $1800, but haven't seen any reliable pricing info yet.

$1,000? I would guess no way.

If it's less than $1,300, I would be suprised.

That's pretty damn sharp at F 1.2, but that thing is a beast.

Interesting that it has an aperture ring. Is Leica still messing around with the concept of joining M4/3s?

Images look very good.

The Panasonic 15/1.7 that was announced has an aperture ring too. I think its something Panasonic plans to do with their "Leica" lenses.

I'd prefer an Oly style snap-focus ring though.

Those look nice. I sure hope I can afford one at some point.

I may keep the Oly 45 though, for when I don't want the extra weight.
Aye, there's the rub. This lens makes the Oly 45 look like sheer genius. Let's see, I have to give up f1.2 and settle for 1.8. Check. And I get to use a lens that weighs, what, a fourth on both the cost and mass scales? Sign me up!

The point of diminishing returns was never more aptly demonstrated.

Sure, I think for most people the 45/1.8 is more than capable. Its sort of like the EF 50/1.8 and the EF 50/1.2, the 1.8 is way smaller, lighter, cheaper, with cheap plastic build but great optics, for most people the 1.2 is total overkill. The amount you pay for a half stop, or a full stop with fast primes is always disproportionate.

I think its great that we will have the choice, an AF 1.2 portrait lens means one more area where M43rds doesn't excel (narrow DOF) has been improved. F2.4 DOF in FF terms is very shallow, and probably shallow enough for me, whereas the 1.8/3.6 leaves a little something to be desired, esp with full body shots.

Plus another 1 1/3rd stops for low light doesn't hurt.

Wouldn't it be great if a lens had both? Then you can use it like a manual lens as well as an auto.

Oh come on man, you know Pany and Oly are bleeding money like a sinking ship. Not only is MFT doomed, apparently all mirrorless are. Why they would offer us an 85mm F1.2 equiv is odd, it's almost as if they want us to believe they have a long term goal to compete with Canikon. I for one am not buying it.................

In contrast, the gap between m43 and DSLR world is progressively getting smaller. This lens will come out as a statement ... technologically and business wise. I can't wait to have 85mm f/1.2 with O.I.S ... something I was waiting for Canon to produce for the past 17 years!

Oh come on man, to use your phrase, it's DSLRs which will ultimately lose the race. The ancient flipping mirror was a great invention in the last century, but it puts a huge limitation to what the camera can do compared to one with an EVF. (OK, today there's still a focus tracking advantage in a premium DSLR for the small percentage of photogs who need that, but in very short order, that will disappear as well.)

Do yourself a favor, bud. Go get a cheap, say, Panny G6 with just the kit lens. Set it up how you like it (it's got 7 function buttons so you can instantly change WB, ISO, AF modes.....actually about 40 different things!....and a total of four custom settings that will remember 4 different setups). It's got a fully articulated touchscreen (if you like using those), takes beautiful 60p HD videos; burst mode auto bracketing; and much, much more.

What you'll really appreciate is the ability to preview a scene, perhaps a bright sunrise scene with deep shadows, brilliant blue sky, and an EV range far exceeding the sensor's capabilities. Wanting to portray (and expose) the primary subject naturally you can manipulate the exposure +/- and watch the image change in the EVF. A live preview! If you want, check a four color histogram of the shot if you have any doubts, or with 2 quick taps, set up a bracket shot...up to 7 with varying EV settings. (Oh! I forgot. You take a lot of pics in these conditions so C2 on the mode dial has already set up everything just the way you like it for these conditions!) The silent, electronic shutter option is pretty slick, too.

Then, blow that image shot with the "crummy kit zoom" up to 100% on your calibrated monitor and pixel peep the crap out of it. Realize that if printed it would be bigger than 30"x40". Then, tell us all that m4/3 and all mirrorless are doomed! ;-)

(Personally, I've got $7-8K of DSLR stuff going on Craigslist.)

Have a great New Year!

Wasabi Bob's Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/14256726@N02/; there's four recent shots taken in Grand Central Station. He was given the lens by Panasonic to shoot some more--hopefully they'll be up soon.

The difference between f1.2 and f1.8 is one full f-stop! Think of it this way: in low light conditions it allows you to shoot at ISO 1600 instead of ISO 3200 in low light conditions, or go from 1/30 sec to 1/60 sec. Both of those adjustments will make a great deal of difference in large sized prints with any m4/3 camera. Also, that 1 f-stop difference can give a reasonably shallow DOF even when focused at far distances, should you be going for that. As one who always shoot two-handed (one on the camera body and one on the lens), a somewhat bigger lens isn't all that big of a deal. And, as one looking for as close to professional imaging from m4/3 as possible, even a price tag around $1K isn't an unreasonable price to pay for the added flexibility which a f/1.2 lens would provide. I've been saving up for this lens ever since it was announced months ago.
