I need some input for Wedding Photography: what settings should I use in the S2 for wedding coverages. I print 5x7, 8x10 for the event highlights and 11x14, 16x20 and 20x24 for portrait shots.

Thanks in advance.

Hi (again) Dennis,

I am not a wedding photog (although I have done some back in the film days!) but I do do a bit of PJ stuff at functions - especially candid portraits. My advice is to use sharp lenses and don't do any in-camera (or EX processing of raw) sharpening for those shots that you may be printing large - say 12x18 or larger. The in-camera sharpening artifacts become very obvious in large prints. I find that even though images may appear a bit un-sharp at full pixel size on screen, when printed they are much sharper and have a more film-like look. I would do any additional sharpening after all post processing using one of the many tools available. For the small print stuff perhaps Std in-camera just to save a bit of time. Any sharpening does tend to increase the contrast a bit and hence decrease the "lattitude" of the shot. I always shoot with tone set to Org for this reason and touch up later if the shot warrants it.

For the small stuff 6mp jpg fine, std sharpen. I've even had real nice 11x14 with this.
The bigger ones, Raw!
I second all what Doug said, especially, Use a sharp lens.
Good luck, -Benny

Hi Dennis!

I'm also from the Philippines. I'm curious where do you have your prints done? I'm unable to locate one here in Baguio. Hope that there is one in Manila.

By the way, Doug, how about the resolution settings in the S2, for the 5x7 and 8x10, what settings should I use? And what would you recommend for the large prints..

Hi Glenn,

Good to hear from a co-citizen! :) To answer your question, I have them done at Image Setters--- this is a sister company of Kodak Phils. They've great printing machines. Their number is [02] 8526792/ 6791. Look for Lucy, she's the Lab Manager. Tell her I referred you. Fuji launched their Frontier machines, but their staffs have still a lot to learn regarding customer service. Sorry to say that here, but it's true. They've got great machines, lots of services to offer, but they've to upgrade their service level.

Hope this helps.

recommend for the large prints..
If there is a chance I may want to print an image I always use Fine 4256 for jpegs or raw. I figure I might as well have the best possible output from the S2. I only use lower settings for documentary stuff like real estate shots for DVD, PC or web use.

Talking of DVD, the upgrade to the EX converter makes it very easy to bulk extract the small jpeg file included in raf files (very quick!). I use these when I want to make a quick Video CD or DVD (or PC auto-run) slide show of a batch of shots.

i have to say its some lab magic too but ive down images at 20x30 so far from the 6mp and they come out more than decent. i dont even see the pixels up close. i know a local photographer that has blown s1 pics up to 4x6 foot prints. im sure if you stick with 6mp youll be fine

when i need to enlarge anything larger than 12x18, i use Genuine Fractals. It's a plug-in for photoshop, and it makes very good prints. I hope this will help
