Does anybody know if Fujifilm is planning to make a full frame X-type camera?

It's extremely unlikely in the near future. Fuji's already struggling to gain users for the current system, fragmenting it further with a full frame system which would require a new mount and an entire new set of lenses for what would ultimately be marginal gains does not make a lot of sense.

Based on the current DP poll results to date, it looks like Fuji is doing pretty good in sales and Brand followers. Besides i think the Fuji family likes to invent and make innovative cameras. It makes sense to me that they may market a ff sensor system.

Regards,

Seems to me that the smart money is on Fuji eventually developing a FF camera, but not any time soon. I'd expect to see it happen much like the X series rollout. We'd probably see a fixed lens FF first (think X200) say around Q1 2015 and then a FF ILC body along with two or three lenses based around a new mound in 2016.

But that's totally speculation, so take it with a shaker full of salt. According to Fuji's product manager fuji has no plans to make a FF camera "any time soon."

Why? What would this bring that a D800e or 5D MKIII would not?

I am assuming that Nikon and Canon will both release mirrorless cameras in the coming year (or two).
I like shooting 6x6 and 6x9 MF - it changes the way you shoot compared to FF 35mm (I had the 5DII)

Completely different experience - much more scope for shallow DOF at f/8 and beyond

The larger bodies also slow you down - encourage the use of tripods - aid in thoughtful composition

It's not for everyone, but I love the effect on my visualization of images, and the final product

Chris,

What is the connection to Fuji FF with what you have said?

I completely agree with you and I take a 4x5 field camera with TMax-100 with me whenever I can. Here is a 4x5 scan from a Speed Graphic in Cambodia (I have too many film cameras to count).

This was shot with a lomo Sprocket Rocket!

But if Fuji were to release a FF mirrorless camera, I would have ZERO lenses for it. I already have a D800e and more lenses than I should. Surely you do (have a FF system) too.

So buying a FF Fuji would mean buying all new lenses.

UNLESS, you are talking about something like the X100s only full frame. If so, SIGN ME UP TOO!

;)

Well, Fuji have a set of MF lenses already - they manufactured the lenses for Haselblad's H series.

But yes, I'd be buying a new set of lenses, unless it was a fixed lens model based on their older MF rangefinders

i think not. The FF market is already fragmented enough with little room for a new competitor. Nikon, Canon and Leica are very well established and have a vast suite of lenses already developed. Sony is throwing all kinds of products on the market hoping one will stick. Their FF system is immature and lacks lenses. That is their big problem and requires further huge investment. Fuji has put vast resources in developing quality ASPC glass so I expect they are committed to the format long term Changing strategy will be create a huge dent of confidence in users and they will leave in droves.

But don't forget, Fuji have already developed a full suite of MF lenses - they were rebadged by Haselblad.

In 2002, when Hasselblad launched the H System, it came with a new and growing set of lenses manufactured by Fujinon...

So they don't have to reinvent the wheel

Chris,

Now you are talking!

Forget FF.

Fuji needs to release a 6x9 digital sensor to blow EVERYONE away! The lenses already exist!

Honestly, I don't know why no one has done this yet. OK, Leica has the S2, but who can afford it or the lenses that go with it. And there are MF backs, but most are not even 6x4.5 in size.

6x9 is 16x larger than APS-C so the camera would be a 256mp monster. 1 frame per 10 seconds. I wouldn't care.

What would you pay for THAT?

We can dream, can't we?

...for many of us.

FF sensor and quality fixed zoom. WA + fisheye adapters will complete the picture. And up-gradable sensor :)

Fuji don't really have a choice and I would expect a FF Fuji at some point in middle to late 2014, Fuji recently said that they were not going to make a FF camera when asked in an interview but they were unlikely to say anything but at this point as it would impact sales of the current and upcoming lenses, also Fuji could have released an updated X-Pro1 as they did with the X-E2 but they haven't and I suspect that they are working on a FF camera and possibly a DSLR shaped APS-C model.

Sony's A7/R cameras have probably started to impact upon Fuji X sales and while the lens selection might be limited at present Sony/Zeiss have shown that FF primes can still be small, light and very high quality.

I completely disagree. Please don't take offense.

I think it is interesting that a 24mmx36mm sensor has been dubbed the ideal. Why? At some point in the future, smaller (than 24x36) sensors will be capable of producing higher resolution and lower noise (image quality) than most people need (they might be close to that already). If someone really wants the shallow depth of field offered by a larger sensor, why be stuck with 24x36? It is a moderate increase (from APS-C) at amost twice the weight and size and would put Fuji in a market that is more than flooded already with Nikon, Canon (these guys will come to the game with a mirrorless very very soon I am sure), Sony, Etc. Why not produce a much larger sensor. Fuji certainly has the history with their 645s, 6x9s, even 617s. If you want to go big, go BIG! I for one would be willing to buy a (much) larger than FF camera from Fuji even if it was very expensive. Right now, the market is thin (Leica S2, MF Backs, Hassleblad) and VERY expensive. Fuji already has the lenses patented and created already from those older LF cameras.

I don't think a single Sony lens is as good as the 14mm, 35mm and 23mm from Fuji. They are an electronics company. And they have done that right. The D800e sensor is Sony. Great job. But as for lenses, they are eons behind.

Again, it is like walking on eggshells around here sometimes. None of this is meant to offend you, nor degrade your opinion. I am just putting more card on the table.
