Thank you trusty old friend, it's hard to say good buy (yes), maybe we'll see each other again.

I've had my trusty Sigma 50mm EX DG 1.4 for maybe a year or so, I've took a number of great pictures with it. I'd like to share some with you guys from a recent trip. It was the only lens I had for my K-30 other than the kit lens. And as sad as it was, I was using the 50mm full time. I felt I was quite limited, but I was able to work around it with alot of walking and repositioning.

However, as I've started to notice, the length is a bit too long for most of my use and I've had to let it go for now and save up money for the 18-35mm 1.8, hopefully it will go on sale soon (if ever).

I have very little bad things to say about the 50mm, at most I can say is that it was quite a behemoth on that Pentax K-30, and it's focusing abilities can sometimes misfire (however, it could be the camera more so than the lens). I'll buy it again in the future if the funds are available because it really forced me to work to get the pictures I wanted.

The 18-35mm will be great for my k-30 until a newer version of the 24-70mm comes out.

Lovely photos. :D

Thank you for posting this, not only for the very nice photos (and they are very nice indeed), but for the suddenly-relevant-to-my-interest comments on the Sigma 50 mm f/1.4. The 85 mm f/2 M was my favorite lens on my K1000 and ever since I got my K-30 I have been looking for a lens in the 50-55 mm range to take the same role. I know the FL and like it.

However, I was concerned about the size and weight of the Sigma, and your description of it as a behemoth on a K-30 makes me pretty sure I should keep looking. I have no great interest in a very shallow depths of field, and with the K-30s excellent high ISO performance I would prefer a smaller lens with a smaller minimum aperture.

That said, I particularly like the image of the woman dropping gravel from her cupped hands.

The lens is quite big and I've always had it on with the flower hood front so it blocked the green focus light of the k-30. It blocked about 3/4 of it. Obviously the lens was designed for full frame so it's not surprising. I would probably buy it again in the future (it's on sale now for $350) on the bhphotovideo.com site. I purchased mine when it was $400.

This particular focus length was just a tad long for my everyday usage, but it was a great lens, better at day time than at night on the K-30. Mostly due to the K-30's somewhat par AF in low light. I didn't get many lens flare over the year, I think probably out of the 10000 pictures, maybe at most 50 or so pics if not less.

The focus is not very fast, but once again this might be the K-30 more so than the lens. I think you may find other lens that are cheaper at the same range from Pentax. I preferred the Sigma because of the auto manual focus override, this is a very useful feature. I never used a filter on my lens because honestly, I don't believe in it and my camera was not used in harsh conditions to warrant having it on to protect the lens.

Now is a good time to buy at $350.
