Today I visited a major photographic trade show in Stockholm, Sweden.

It was nice to have a look at the new GM1 in the Lumix stand, and they also had a prototype of the upcoming Panasonic Leica 42,5/f1.2 portrait lens.

It's pretty large and feels great in the hand.

According to one of the Lumix representatives it may cost as much €1.700 when released!

It is obviously not a confirmed fact, but still quit an astonishing pricepoint to be suggested.

It will have to be extremely good optically if that's true, the format is *full* of amazing portrait lenses, and the Voigt 42.5 is faster than that and costs 'just' one cool grand...

I fully agree. Such a pricepoint would make the Oly 45/1.8 look like even better value...

I for one will not be queuing up for it if it turns out to be true. The €620 I paid for the PL 25/1.4 was already quite a stretch for a 'nifty fifty' (even if I love it...), but over €1.500 is way out of reach for most hobbyist I guess.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what 'reps' say. I went to a photo Salon in Paris a couple of weeks ago and the Oly 'rep' referred to the EM-1 as a DSLR and that the VF in it was the same as the EM-5, he went on to say that the new 12-40 lens was 599 euros. I checked, it's 999!!

Time will tell.

That's about right for the cost you pay extra for the lens when bundled with the EM1

Same reps told me about €1400, time will tell but I think it's pretty certain it'll be over €1000.

Yeah, I know what you mean. An Olympus rep I spoke to wasn't to sure about the difference between the OM-D E-M1 and E-M5, except that the E-M1 was 'pro' and had a better sensor. Duh...

Oh, you got a better price :-)

1700 EU with a camera body?

I expect it to be quite expensive. Building a Leica-quality f/1.2 lens is not cheap, never mind one which is also a good AF performer, etc.

The Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH which is in my wish list is $2200. If the Nocticron-DG 42.5mm f/1.2 ASPH comes in for less than $2000, I'll be happy.

Here's a photo taken at seminar last week.

With Pana GH 3 & 42.5/f12 ...... f/1.2, 1/100 sec, ISO 320 at 43mm available light, no processing

Great lens

That's what I thought initially, then I saw the same price printed in a shop brochure, salivated, then went to (possibly) get one, then was told of the 'printing error'.

It will be very expensive, clearly.

It is the fastest autofocus capable Micro Four Thirds lens so far.

It has OIS.

It is Leica branded.

They don't come much more expensive than this ...
You mean overpriced...?

The Oly 45mm f1.8 seems like a steal at under $US 400. Of course the Panasonic is faster has OIS, etc.... But I cannot imagine the image quality or faster aperture will justify the expense.
I realize the Oly 45 is built "cheap", but it takes AWESOME pics.

To put the price into perspective. Someone just grabbed a rare 1932 Leica for $620,000 USD. And it was expected to go for over $1million.

The security guard was probably paid $1500 for his time lol.

I highly doubt $1700 USD in 1700 Euros HA not happening nope sorry... youll find everyone suddenly more than willing to throw their money at Olympus. and this is coming from a panny user.
