Hi,
Earlier in the year I canvassed views on whether to take both the x100 AND the X-E1 on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Venice. In the end, and considering the replies I took just the X-E1 and I was really pleased that it performed faultlessly. I have however, been procrastinating about posting my efforts because I've been viewing some STUNNING Venice pictures from other posters which have totally shot my confidence to bits. I realise now that I handicapped my efforts by not taking a tripod and ND filter. (The pitfall of 'carry-on' hand luggage) Such a basic addition to the kit would have dramatically enhanced my chances of better photography. Lesson learnt.

If I can manage to upload my photos I am prepared for some vitriolic C&C as I do like to work on my files.... I guess its a habit from 3 or 4 decades of hand printing bromides and Cibachromes, I always feel that the negative/raw file is just the starting point. I know others on here don't share that view which is great, that's what makes our passion so fluid, our visions so expansive. So I really will consider all comments, I am happy the continue learning, especially from all you guys who took a tripod to that magical city.

Absolutely no shame there and you've really captured Canaletto's Venetian light in #6. Regret nothing.

Nice pictures. I liked the painterly effects in the last few shots.

Faced with a similar dilemma in India I took both cameras, however the X100 charger malfunctioned on the 2nd day so I had to "manage" with just the X-E1 anyway! Your photos are just fine and hold their own with anything else posted here. In my opinion part of the appeal of the X-series is their ability to be used with spontaneity and this is hampered by having to carry a tripod around on holiday. That leaves the ND filter, which although extremely useful is certainly no deal breaker, especially if you shoot RAW.

nice feel of the city

thanks for posting

No flak from here.....just some beautiful images from what appears to have been a wonderful trip.

Tony168,

Almost any competent photographer can produce landscape and architectural images of merit and yours certainly qualify. It is Venice as I remember it. But it is your street shots that really shine.
From a photo-journalistic standpoint, they certainly tell a story which is the whole point of P.J.. While the Nuns with gelato image is charming, your two people shopping is a real winner. It tells you almost everything you wanted to know about the two people, their relationship and some of their attitudes.

If it were me, I'd concentrate on P.J. You have talent.

Tony. These are a great set, Nos 2 and 6 I think are exceptional.

Beautiful work. I like them all except the fourth, which kind of makes my eyes hurt.

I liked all of them. The variety you put into these shots is refreshing too.

You would have good better pics with the X-100s.

Kidding. Its the photographer that counts first, then the material.

Nice work

I'm no expert, but I sure enjoyed that set thoroughly!! Thanks for sharing them.

Nice images, but I can't help thinking that if the got rid of all that water, they'd have the makings of quite a nice little town ;-)

Tony,

Nice work! Like all of them. You have a good eye for photography.

First, let me congratulate you. I like your photo and I like your style. I think you have a good eye and a very nice artistic vision. Coming from a similar school where Ienjoyed doing stuff like cross processing, bypass bleach etc. I don't do much of it now in digita because I didn't find it challenging but I realise it is a mistake and will probably get back to it when I retire.

I was in Venice during the 2013 Carnival and it was just amazing. It was like walking inside a Turner's painting.

Far far as fear is concerned, I used an EM-5 and four lenses, all in my coat pocke and no bag. I has a flash but never used it so it stayed in the room. I never take a tripod for such trips because I need to be fast and flexible bur always add a light monopod to my travel gear but didn't have to use it here.

Here are my photos. there is nothing very artistic here but I have all the raw files and one day I'll come back to it.

Nice images, especially like the last one.

Nice set. I particularly like #6. Most would have shot the walkway down the middle, but I like the way you did it from the side. I like it when I learn something new from others' samples.

Wonderful.
