I mostly use my NEX-7 with Sony's first version 18-100mm lens. This camera/lens combo cost me about $2,000.

So I'm thinking, maybe the 24-200mm RX10 for a total of $1300 would better suit my purposes, albeit with some image quality compromises. Maybe. Just how much I don't know. I'm pretty sure that f/6.3 18-200 lens doesn't really let my NEX-7 really shine. But I need some reach for what I like to shoot.

The RX10 is probably smaller altogether than the NEX-7 + 18-200. And it has a much faster lens with just as much reach. And it's weatherproofed. A lot of times I don't bring my NEX-7 because of the weather. And honestly, it's kind of bulky and heavy with that 18-200 lens. And, you know, all things considered, that pricey Sony 18-200 is a measly f/6.3 on the long end!

So I'm thinking, maybe I should dump my RX100 for $400, put a fast prime or better quality small zoom lens on the NEX-7, and use it in place of the RX100. With a small lens, the NEX-7 still wouldn't be as small as the RX100, but it would be pretty small. Much smaller and lighter than it is with the 18-200. And probably yield even better results than the RX100.

What do you guys think?

Faster shutter speed has everything to do with f/2.8 regardless of format folks…that is where the f/2.8 will beat the slower f/6.3 lens over and over and over…I can take the FZ200 Superzoom with 600mm f/2.8 and provide excellent results…SHUTTER SPEED is where it is at folks…ask anyone that shoots longer tele's...

Mr Ichiro Kitao, I support the call to upgrade the FZ50.
I will not only buy one but two no questions asked...
2.8 is 2.8 at the same ISO, sure. But bigger formats let you shoot higher ISOs more cleanly and have a better S/N ratio across the board. At max clean ISOs the RX10 and latest NEX are about even wide open at the tele end. If it were just about max f/stop large formats wouldn't exist.

I have a similar question but I have a d610 on the side for quality pictures. I doubt the Nex 7 would be surpassed.

Hello all,

I own a NEX5C (2010) and also a SELP 18-200 lens (and a sel35f18 to switch when low light needed)

So my obvious question is (taking into account that you talk about a NEX 7) if you see any point into changing the equipment I have with a RX10.

RX has wifi, viewfinder etc but what I really need/want is good performance in low light and nice movie performance.

Many Thanks

Dani
