For anyone looking for a digital wallet device/multimedia device, here is a new one just release. It's a little pricy ($499), but if we are to believe the specs that seems to be the ball park for devices of this nature.

It is rather attractive, and hoping that the display is as crisp as it appears that would be a bonus. Only problem is that it currently does not support images in a RAW format.

It might: Quoting from their FAQs

"Does FlashTrax read RAW format data (from Canon, Nikon, etc)?.

FlashTrax can read any RAW format files from flash media and store them on its hard drive, just like JPEG’s. FlashTrax also provides the ability to view many RAW format files on its LCD"

But the site doesn't make it clear whether Canon is specifically supported for viewing the files. At least I couldn't find it.

I was of the impression that it would download any kind of file, but not necessarily view the them...

It is doomed if it doesn't support raw files...

The copy does say that it may support viewing some raw files, but even the PDF manual doesn't specify which. The omission of info like that in a manual leaves me very suspect...

Forget image tank, digital wallet, etc...my experience with all those devices is that they're nothing but inferior and unreliable products at ridiculous prices.

What we need is for the iPod to have expanded capabilities, cross-platform...I necessarily don't need image viewing, but image confirmation is most important...

I disagree.. I own one of the original Digital Wallets from MindStor and short of the battery not charging to full capacity, I must say that it does what it was designed to do well..

If your gonna spend 499.00 for a digital wallet then why wouldnt you go the extra 300.00 and get a laptop? Then you have a nice large screen, 40-60 GB hard drive, internet access on the road, and you can also burn CD's. The only advantage those units have is thier small size.

Very good point... However if you are travelling with any amount of equipment a laptop can be an additional piece of luggage that you may just not want to travel with, and that's what you are paying for... the conveinence of size, especially if you have no plans of post processing on the road...

However again, you do make a good point.... it all comes down to how you work while on the road, and finances...

That would actually be a cool device to have (if it support Canon RAW files). During photo sessions I often end up driving the models around. They always like to see the pictures on the way back after the shoot and it would be nice to give them a device with a little bigger screen and an easier UI instead of handing them my camera. But... I already have a Tripper so I can't justify the cost at the moment.

It can store any kind of file, image file or otherwise. But at this time you cannot view RAW files from a Canon 1D. You can view D60 RAW files. Supposedly they will have firmware upgrades that will allow viewing of other files.

I got mine because it is a lot cheaper than 1GB microdrives and very small in size (about the size of a cigarette pack). I have travelled with a laptop and it is just not very convenient at times.

It works very well.

Can you tell me please, is it possible to exhange the hard disk with another IDE one (perhaps with the aid of a screw driver). ie. can I buy one unit and have a bunch of hard disks? (if so, are they 2.5" laptop style hdds, or standard 3.5" ones?)

Cheers

I have SEVERAL easily answered questions questions:

Does the LCD display show a high quality file...good enough for a customer to review?

Does the displayed image also have the filename displayed (for ID purposes)?

Does the viewer (thumbnails and/or pictures) change quickly when scrolling or viewing the next picture?

Thanks,

Wally

High quality is relative on a 3.5" screen. It will give the client a good feel for the image, but it's no better than previewing on the camera's LCD display.
Does the displayed image also have the filename displayed (for ID
purposes)?
It uses a windows type (explorer) file viewer with the file name and a thumbnail view when highlighted.
Does the viewer (thumbnails and/or pictures) change quickly when
scrolling or viewing the next picture?
slight delay.
Thanks,

Wally

Looked nice initially, but then I saw this item in the FAQ:

"Can FlashTrax erase images off CompactFlash?

Yes, or it can reformat the CF card if desired. (Note: it is usually easier to use the camera to erase or reformat after a transfer to FlashTrax, than to use FlashTrax itself.)"

Sorry, Smartdisk, but I want to stick the CF card in the device, press one button, and, when it beeps, pull an empty, ready-to-use CF card out. (I always use MOVE to get the photos off in Windows.)
