Hiy'all,

I want advice, I know what floodgates i am opening up here, so be kind. Someone wants to buy me a lens for my NEX 6 for Christmas and they want to know which one I want. I've already got the 55-210 taken care of myself, so this where I need a lil help.

I primarily shoot outdoors, nature, people, street, landscapes, kids, birds on the lake. surfing. Rarely indoors, unless it is a roller derby bout or a dinner party. I love macro photography so I have been thinking about the sony 30mm for that, but then I have heard the 50mm is good too, I think the 50mm is F 2.8? correct me if i am wrong. It is a bit different from the 50 on the 16-50 because this 50mm lens is a fixed prime right?

This someone has a balance of about 300$ so asking for the 10-18mm which is what I would love! is out of the picture for now. Maybe next year when I have saved up enough for a lens that costs the same as a whole camera.

between these two which would you recommend? I am still comfortable with OSS and not quite ready to dive into some of the SIGMA's which have no OSS, or am i wrong? would SIGMA help with some of the shortfalls the NEX 6 has with AF? Which hasn't really ever bothered me, I work around it, trying a different angle and it usually grabs a hold of the image clearly the second time, I just figured I would ask.

So, I would love feedback, maybe I have missed another option you could suggest.

Thank you DP folks, Chancey.

Chancey,

IF, BIG IF, " Someone wants to buy me a lens for my NEX 6 for Christmas and they want to know which one I want"

My obvious and trivial answer is: LEICA 50MM F/0.95 ASPH. NOCTILUX-M

I can use it on my NEX-7 and M9 for now, and then on the A7R when I replace my NEX-7 with A7R!

Do I need an adapter for that lens?

I like the Sony E mount OSS lenses. I have the 50mm/F1.8 and love it. I tend to prefer the more "portrait" feel of the 50mm (75mm equivalent), despite its limitations. It is also extremely sharp even wide open. However, seeing that you already have the 55-210mm, I don't know that you would use it much.

If I could splurge I would definitely also get the 35mm/F1.8, but I did not because it's more expensive. I think it would be a great choice, since it's wider than the telephoto lens you have, and MUCH better than the kit lens. But since the person budged $300, it's too much at $450.

Here's another good article for you to look through:

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/these-are-the-first-lenses-you-should-buy-for-a-sony-nex/

Keep in mind that the Sony E mount lenses are absolutely silent, while the Sigma lenses are not. That is in my opinion one big reason to stick with the E mount. Hope you have a good time with your new Christmas lens, whichever one it will be!

SEL 1.8/50 is the obvious choice as it fits the budget and covers quite a few of your areas of interest. It takes better pictures all-round than the zoom lens at 50. It is sharper, provides shallow depth-of-field and better rendering.

Yes, Leica M to NEX adapter, which I already have a Novoflex. There are a lot of adapters for this in the market, from the more expensive Novoflex, to moderate Metabones, to cheapie, prices.

Well, the Leica 50Nocti may costs quite a bit for some. Waiting for someone to buy me this X'mas gift.

:-)

The 50mm is f1.8, I think. It would probably be good for portraits, but it's a bit narrow of a view for general use.

What about the 20mm pancake?

the 30mm macro doesn't get a lot of excitement, but those who have it seem to give it high marks.

If money were no object, I'd get the 24CZ. As it is, I have the Sigma 30mm.

Hi ChanSeuse.

I would go to the extremes and get the SEL 16mm f2.8 pancake + Ultra Wide Angle Adapter, which converts it to a 12mm lens. You get something similar to the 10-18mm (16 and 12mm) and the 16mm alone makes the NEX very portable. I've had lots of fun with that combo and the lens alone, and really recommend it. This way you get 12mm + 16mm + 55-210mm. It is not stabilized but being so wide that is not a problem for me (I don't do a lot of video, anyway).

The SEL 50mm f1.8 has superior quality and allows for better low-light pics but you already have that focal length. I bought it after buying the 18-200mm though and was pleasantly surprised but its purposes IMO are somewhat different, just to say that even having that focal length covered it's really worth it, specially for portraits.

The best compromise would be the 35mm f1.8 (Wider, fast, with OSS and relatively small), but it cost +/- 450 USD.

Hope this helps and Merry Christmas!

Mmm, additionally, for macro, I would reccomend you to buy a Raynox-150 (70 USD??) + 1 49mm-52mm step-up ring. You can attach it to any 49mm filter lens that way.

SEL 16mm + UWA adapter= 240 USD + Raynox= 310 USD.

Just 10 USD over ur budget.

Hey everyone at DP,

Thank you for your suggestions, I now have a new slew of lenses and adapters I can obsess on, My thoughts are leaning more towards the 50mm as I do a lot of portrait stuff on the street and I like a nice bokeh so, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

Chancey.

I would take a look at the 3 sigma 2.8 primes (19mm, 30mm, 60mm).

With your budget you could get 2 of them used on ebay and have 2 nice lenses.

They don't have OSS but are all very sharp. I haven't noticed any issue with not having the OSS.
