Flash for the NEX 6

Any standard flash works with the Nex6 including the Nikon. If you want TTL you will have to purchase a flash designed for Sony which is not the same as a Sony flash. Lots of flashes are manufactured to work with Sony cameras as a dedicated flash with TTL, exposure compensation, etc.

That said your Nikon will work well both on and off camera. Most professional studios do not use dedicated flashes rather monolights or packs. Most pro setups use three or more strobes. However for portable lighting two flashes can work well especially if you can bounce the primary flash. Bouncing can be done using any white surface. Bouncing against a purple surface is a bad idea unless you are planning on BW or enjoy a plum look.

I use flash often mainly as a fill maybe -1 1/3 for that non flash look. Fill Flash is a great way to bring out your subject, and most will never realize why your images have that spark.
