Disaster struck this weekend. The system crashed. I installed a new drive and went to Win XP Pro from 2000 pro.

Everything went fine on the rebuild and I have access to the old Drive with my previous Photoshop 7 install.

The Question is … How do I get the actions back that I created? I copied all the .atn files I could find over to the new disk.

All the Miranda actions etc were pulled into the new Photoshop install fine. I just can’t find the actions I created for Workflow

And Framing with my copyright. Where are they hiding on the old disk? They were under the default actions group and I moved that file
Over… nothing but the PS7 default actions.. Does anyone have any ideas? Help.

Do a complete search on your drive(s) for " .atn" and then gather them all up, put them into a separate folder. These do NOT have to be in any specific folder and they don't have to be in a Photoshop folder. I keep all my actions on a separate drive just in case my C: crashes. I've actually sorted them into different folders, ie: artwork, correction, enhancement, B&W, etc for ease of searching. Then you start PS7, and load them from there into your pallette.

We don't see things as they are, we see them as WE are.

RE: All the actions you created lived in the Default Actions action set.

Did you ever perform a "save actions..." command on that action set, creating an .atn backup file? If so, just load that backup file into your new Actions Palette and you're back in business.

Plan B if no backup Default Actions.atn:

Each time you shutdown Photoshop, the contents of the actions palette (if modified in any way since the last shutdown) is written to the actions preferences file, Actions Palette.psp.

This file is probably located

C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0\Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings

Where [user name] is typically your name or ID. Since you've got a new system, it most likely won't be C:\ ... it will be wherever this backup image lives.

Note: Actions Palette.psp was a “hidden file” as far as Windows was concerned on my W2K system, so you may have do whatever you have to do under Win XP PRO to "show hidden files."

Essentially what you want to do is:
  • Save any new actions you've created or modified since the new install to your hard disk via Save Actions commands
  • Shutdown Photoshop.
  • Copy Actions Palette.psp from your old system and replace Actions Palette.psp in your current \Documents and Settings\ folder.
  • When you bring PS up again, the actions palette will be populated from the Actions Palette.psp from the old system. Your actions palette will contain whatever actions were in it the last time you successfully shutdown PS before your system crashed.
  • Load the action set file (.atn) created in the first step if applicable.
Hope this helps. E-mail me if you have questions on this.
