Double Phooey, camera broke today. Not what you would call a non functioning or dead in the water break but a break that is going to cause a hassle.

Normally I download my images via the usb cord, have for ever and then a few. Yes I've tried using a reader for the flash card but I find that method less organized and more of a hassle and takes more effort. Anyway the usb receptacle in my camera is busted and will not accept a cord. Phooey and phooey!

Phooey again! Maybe I'll take a closer look at that new 70D or even the 6D since my 50D is 5 years old. Na the 6D gotta be out of my budget 70D not a problem.

Not super news, but maybe an opportunity to upgrade the sensor.

BTW, do you use a DAM? I have been moving to Lightroom, and like its ability to import photos from a card which I insert into my ps reader.

I can put them where I want, change the file name, and add keywords all during the import. I have grown to like it.

....I think you broke it on purpose....or subconsciously at least....lol

Enjoy you search for, and arrival of a new camera! (whatever it ends up being)

Best Wishes, Traveller

Does dropping a 3 phase 480 volt 800 amp circuit breaker on your camera count as "on purpose"? .... Oops! Dang that guy cost way more than the cam.

What a hassle it is now to download the pictures., I have a built in reader but I still have to make the directory, transfer and who knows what else. I was really dependent on DPP taking care of all that for me via "The Cord" That 6D is looking more and more attractive but then I'd have to hang out over in the stuffy (my camera can beat up your camera) 1D-6D pro forum. Good thing all my lenses are EF and not EFS because that would make the decision for me. Should I be mentioning the phrase "New Camera" to the wife?

...I have a friend with a new 6D...he is very happy with it...but doesn't use it much, ofter preferring his cell phone...(go figure).

Personally, I leave for Monterrey and Pebble Beach tomorrow, 1st time out of the house in any meaningful way in over a year.

I avoid veterans, and while I write on war a lot...I avoid that past of my life...but I am going to go meet my lads after 50 years apart...to be blunt, when I stopped shooting people, I really stopped everything with the military.

This should be quite emotional....maybe....I am hard as nails and the lads have been waiting many years for this.

We will see.

Best Wishes, Traveller

If you use the Canon Loyalty program, I think you can get a refurbished 6D for not much more than a new 70D.

Anyone have a link to access this theoretical Loyalty program?
Here's a quote from a post on another site about this program. You have to phone to get the price. From what I could see on the Canon refurbished site, the 6D, after 20% discount, should be about $1200, plus sales tax:
In a nutshell, the Canon Loyalty Program (CLP) allows you to trade broken/damaged cameras towards the purchase of a refurbished camera. (Sometimes you can even trade up to a refurbished body and refurbished lens.) The program is not promoted on the Internet, but you can find a lot of "buzz" about the program if you Google it.

The way that many people use the program is to take an old Canon P&S, or even purchase an old Canon P&S off of EBay, and call the CLP number to see what's available on the program today. (The number to call is: 1 (866) 443-8002, option "2".) The available bodies changes daily, so if what you want is not available today, call back tomorrow, or the next day.

When you find an acceptable refurbished body through the program, you may order the refurbished camera over the phone.

When you receive the refurbished body it should have a prepaid shipping sticker to attach to the box containing your broken camera. If you do not return the broken camera in time you will be charged the full refurbished price on your credit card. If you do return the broken camera in time you should receive a 10 to 20 percent discount on your refurbished body.

Check the Canon Direct Store to see what "might" be available. If, when you call the CLP, the refurbished model you want is said not to be available, but you see it in their store, call back and talk to another person.

If you want more details about the program, call the CLP number. (1 (866) 443-8002, option "2".)
Edit: If you click on the link to the Canon Direct Store, it takes you to a page saying the page can't be found. However, on that same page there is a menu which includes the Canon refurbished store. So just use that to see what's available currently. Remember, the prices shown in the refurbished store are not what you will pay through the loyalty program. You should get a further 20% off through the loyalty program.

Thanks for the information Alastair, I'm not sure which way I will go but realistically nothing is off the table. I'm sure I don't want to send in my 5 year old 50D for repairs so other than that it most likely will be a 70 or a 6. Full frame is rather alluring.....heaven forbid I jump ship and go to Niikon. I'd feel like a turncoat.

Wow ... Thanks, everybody, I wasn't expecting that ...

I'll get a new challenge up shortly.

Thanks again for your votes ... and congratulations to Dave for winning Exhibition. There were so many excellent images in both categories that I wish I could have voted for more of them.

Well yes, what a great service! is all I can say about the Canon Loyalty program and I am very happy to publish my experience to the world to see.

For about 6 months now I have been playing with the idea of finally upgrading my two cameras for a 5D MKIII. I have used Canon all my life, both film and digital, and love my 40D and 50D to bits, which I bought second hand via eBay many years ago, but time to move up to a FF Canon. So taking stock of the market, the various discount outlets and Canons refurbished products offered on their site. I kept seeing many 5D bodies going for around $2,800 or so second hand or the new price staying at $3,300 and above. So I took the plunge and called the CLP number, which was a great thing to do, the staff were very helpful, immediately answering the phone after making one option selection (#2). He explained the program, how it works and what I was entitled to, along with other options (Extra lenses) and the extra level of discount they would give (Varied from 10% to 35% dependent upon the item). They also explained that many of the units are returned to them as surplus stock or dealer returns etc. At the time of my call they did not have any returned 5D’s in stock, and I was told to look at the refurb site regularly and when I saw they were in stock, go ahead and call.

Well I did just that last week, and got me a 5D MKIII body only for $2400 (Refurb price less 10%) and I only have to send them my very very old and non working Digital Rebel, which they gave me a pre paid return label to do it with!

Now good as that may seem to get a one year warranty and a factory refurb unit, for around 25% of the new price, imagine my surprise, when all the accessories included are all completely new (Strap, battery, charger, books etc), but the best was yet to come when I checked the shutter count upon receipt of this unit …… 16 !!! yes only 16 shots fired on a shutter that is said to last for 150,000. It is brand new, the camera is totally immaculate and never been used anywhere – Thank you Canon.

I am such a loyal fan now and will always use your Loyalty Program, I have already started saving for my ‘L’ lens. I wholly recommend this service to everyone. For anyone on the fence about this program, just call them now and see what a great Company they are.
