Nikon Rumours: Five images of the new Nikon DF

Not that much larger actually, I like it a lot. But it's looking like price won't be low, it's Made in Japan.

Good shooting and good luck
(after Ed Murrow)

I'm in. This could well replace my old Leica M3 as my perennial camera. Add a V1 for video and I'm done, the problem will be the lots of $ needed for the good lenses, but maybe I just to have to go back to film days and use only one good prime (it used to be the Summicron 35). Minimize gear and concentrate on photography.

Thanks for posting that picture. I didn't know how cluttered the Df looked until now. Wow.

Always have a camera with you and make sure you use it.

Looks kind of nice. Finally a camera with a dedicated ISO dial. Not sure whether placing the exposure compensation dial on the left side is a such a good idea though.

Dynamic range, highlight roll-off (harsh highlight clipping), tonal gradation, micro contrast, shadow noise, ya-da, ya-da, is where R&D needs to be focused, ihmo.

Given an "adequate" level of functionality, ultimately its about image quality for me. The "camp" that addresses the above issues will get my vote, and my $.

I do like the looks of the body, it'd be fun to shoot!

Doesn't actually matter how cluttered it looks. The moment you start thinking through the settings you habitually change during a photographic stroll, you begin to see why the clutter's there. Would you rather dive into a menu? :)

Looks like the Nikon designers took the Fuji & Sony retro models tossed them in a room with a 100 monkeys & this is what came out.

How would one use the drive mode? With a fingernail? What's with the front dial? That looks like it's easy to use </sarcasm> And tell me why they wasted all the space with the LCD? I need to see battery & shots full time why? (when everything else is manual)

Reminds me of an Accord I sat in a couple of years ago & the radio had 6.2 million buttons......all of which were too small to be truly practical. Looks like Nikon's designers are grasping at straws. The Bahaus look of the V1 was ragged so they went the other way "you want BUTTONS!!?? we give you BUTTONS!!!!!" with little thought to where the line of excess might be. Like the ISO/Exp comp look good, the drive looks stupid........little thinking, just "more is better". Also, 1/4000? No F1.4 in daylight that seems a given.

All that really counts is what's on the inside but looks like Nikon hire the Q10 group :D
Come on now. Admit it. You like it :)

I'll go with intrigued :D
Wow you really went all out to find "problems" in a camera. Not everyone is you and I actually use the battery and shots left indicator all the time. I agree with you on some of the small buttons and dials, but we'll see how they work out in real life and not a picture.

As for not using f/1.4 in daylight, are you serious? Just ratchet your ISO down and if that's not enough get a ND filter. I used my Konica Hexar with a full 1/250 of a second outdoors in daylight for decades. I'm sure you'll find a way to make due also, if you buy the camera.
Not at all. First who said problems, all I did was question some of the design. And I agree, we'll see how it works in real world.............given the size that many button could be an issue.....maybe not. It also depends on use - I like the ISO & Exp Comp dials even though I never change ISO with anything but a command wheel. Just how I do it, but I still like the wheel :D

As for the shutter that's the point of technology - shouldn't have to make due. That's doing retro just to be retro without any thought of real world use. Like car companies re-making old 70's models to trade on the retro feel/look = still a rear wheel drive turd, just like it was in the 70's. Retro look is one thing but doing it when it hits function is whole 'nother matter.

Yes, that does look ominous, price-wise, I mean. But I was glad to see a plastic inner frame, which means the construction is on par with D610.

Also, absolutely no video-related buttons. Curious.

Now, where's that 'PASSED' sticker?

Controls right up front where you can see them and get to them QUICKLY. PSAM gets a dial, shutter speeds gets a dial, ISO and exposure compensation gets a dial. Quick access, oriented towards STILL, exactly what an SLR should be.

No stupid YouTube mode cluttering up a STILLS camera, thank you thank you. Videophiles are about as welcome to SLR territory as child molesters are to Disneyland, & this camera rightly gives them the boot, go back where you came from! This is a camera for people who want to take pictures, good ones, and nothing but pictures, PERIOD. If I wanted to record YouTube movies I'd get a video camera, thank you very much. You're too lazy to tote 2 devices--TOUGH! Do the work, or do without, I say.

A vintage cable release--I love the ML-L3 wireless, yet still, thank you. Considering how easy it is to thread a shutter release & seeing as how universal, readily available and cheap mechanical cable releases are, there is NO reason NOT to thread the button to at least provide the option.

Unfortunately, the cost will probably be prohibitive for me, if it's $3000 & such (vs $1500 or so), but if I can swing whatever it costs, I think I could do this. THIS is a camera, my friends, THIS is a camera. Everyone else can have their YouTube SLRs and their phone cameras they THINK measures up to even 1/billionth of a per cent to something like this.

Thanks for running well and supporting your thread!

I believe that size differences between those three bodies doesn't play too much role. They are three completely different camera propositions. The only common is that they are full frame.

yeah. and the FE 35mm is f2.8. FE f1.8 50mm equivalent (55mm) is quite a bit larger. Scroll here some to compare – it’s the pair in the front. The sensor to mount distance is very different which is affecting design of a lens, too.

... is that I didn't hang on to my old manual shutter release cable :~) Otherwise, this little baby would look awfully nice in my camera bag. I'm thinking silver.

1) love the styling overall; glad they keep the FM styling honest

2) like how they keep the top plate thinner than the lower body, gives the impression of a smaller camera (learn from Olympus Pen)

3) Wish they do away with the grip and provide option for external grip a la MD2; keep the basic body small and light (maybe they need to house the WIFI there?

4) Brilliant ISO dial

5) prefer to have the exposure adjustment in place of the PASM dial; I use that more often than PASM so should be on the right (for right handers)

6) love the faux leather on top of the prism and the old fashioned Nikon logo

7) The LCD and front dials remind me of the Contax G2 (one of my fav cameras of all time , well done)

8) there are 2 many dials in front , especially the 2 by the lens on the left ( are they needed?)

9) the DF logo (mainly the F letter) is a bit out of place; would prefer the letterings to look like that of a FM2 (maybe they try to copy Olympus Pen F?)

10) the back is pure modern DSLR so nothing to write home about

11) clever design on the enclosed flash mount to stop the flash and also improves aesthetic from the front

12) missing 1/8000 speed (ouch!)

13) showing off Made in Japan on top to exude quality craftsmanship

14) new 50mm is very AI like with brass band

Overall : 'A' for styling exercise (A+ if above 'flaws' are fixed)

Very well done Nikon

Now bring us the Nikon S3 digital next

Cheers ;-)

Would be interesting to add a D800 into this photo set. Then I think we'd be admiring how small that Df is!

No video.

Hehe

Aperture dial is on the D, AI, AIS lenses:)

I still have some of them. So, mine will have aperture dials visible.

no, the 2 buttons under the control wheel on the left

Could have made them flush with the lens mount like the AF/M/AFC/ button on the right

Cheers,

It is the left side of the camera. AF/M/AFC control is not there. The controls are BKT and AF/M.

And no, the buttons on the right side of the camera is where they should be.
