Nikon Rumours: Five images of the new Nikon DF

As I mentioned in another thread (there will be many threads, I'm sure, about this camera) it seems to be the camera most D700 owners were looking for, (rumored) higher resolution (D4 24MP sensor) in a (presumably) well made body. I'd have been happy with these suggested specs regardless of the styling, though personally I like the mechanical dials (I also have an X100s).

So setting the aperture on lenses without a ring, are we going to have to get used to using our thumb wheel instead of our finger like it's currently configured on their other cameras? That's going to take a while to get used to. Anyone care to guess what the larger round dial on the face of the camera is for? I hope that's not for Aperture adjustment.

Looks like the Nikon designers took the Fuji & Sony retro models tossed them in a room with a 100 monkeys & this is what came out.

How would one use the drive mode? With a fingernail? What's with the front dial? That looks like it's easy to use </sarcasm> And tell me why they wasted all the space with the LCD? I need to see battery & shots full time why? (when everything else is manual)

Reminds me of an Accord I sat in a couple of years ago & the radio had 6.2 million buttons......all of which were too small to be truly practical. Looks like Nikon's designers are grasping at straws. The Bahaus look of the V1 was ragged so they went the other way "you want BUTTONS!!?? we give you BUTTONS!!!!!" with little thought to where the line of excess might be. Like the ISO/Exp comp look good, the drive looks stupid........little thinking, just "more is better". Also, 1/4000? No F1.4 in daylight that seems a given.

All that really counts is what's on the inside but looks like Nikon hire the Q10 group :D
Come on now. Admit it. You like it :)

Well, this looks the business...just have to make one decision...

Silver or Black ??? I will consult with myself, then sleep on it!!!

John.

Wow you really went all out to find "problems" in a camera. Not everyone is you and I actually use the battery and shots left indicator all the time. I agree with you on some of the small buttons and dials, but we'll see how they work out in real life and not a picture.

As for not using f/1.4 in daylight, are you serious? Just ratchet your ISO down and if that's not enough get a ND filter. I used my Konica Hexar with a full 1/250 of a second outdoors in daylight for decades. I'm sure you'll find a way to make due also, if you buy the camera.

I've shot with Nikons from 1969 to 2005. This is no FE/FM/F3A. Way too busy -- too much going on for the "pure photography" bit.

And where's the aperture dial?

That's right it is better than the FE/FM/F3A.

Welcome to 2013 :-)

It will be interesting to see what they price it at. First thing I noticed was the "Made in Japan". That will increase the price . NikonRumours site was down when I tried ths morning and still doesn't seem to be up. Must have gotten quite a bit of traffic after these pictures posted. Well tomorrow or tonight isn't far away to get the details.
Yeah mentioned above the price too ... this will not be cheap, not to mention that good looking piece of glass on the front!

A7/A7R + lack of native lenses at launch + adapter to 3rd party lens + low body price + small size and weight

vs

Nikon DF + lots of lens + higher price + better looks + larger size and weight

Still waiting on the specs ... but for those who already have Nikon glass or are happy with the few that will be designed for this camera it will be a winner.

Also, depending on the success of this camera, I wonder if Nikon will branch out to both lower and higher models with similar retro design.

Would be interested in a F3HP design.

If you take the time to notice, the shutter speed dial incorporates a setting for 1/3 stops, which would require the LCD (as only whole EV increments are engraved on the dial). The shutters speed display would also be required, ostensibly, for settings longer than 4 seconds. And, of course, aperture, battery status and shots remaining are most efficiently displayed on a small digital LCD.

The front dial is obviously for setting aperture (by default–I always switch this to shutter speed because I started with Canons) with lenses lacking an aperture ring–or even with AI/AI-S lenses, if that is one's preference.

And if you can't manipulate the drive mode level with your thumb and index fingers, you're either related to Shrek or need to consider ways to reduce inflammation. :-)

I find this, just from the control locations, a quite well thought-out design. Can't wait to get my hands on one!

Yeah, that's a bummer...unless, like the longer shutter speed settings, it's simply a matter of using the command dial to access the maximum speeds! Regardless...there is apparently enough right with this camera that I'd live with that omission–especially if the minimum ISO fell to 50.
All that really counts is what's on the inside but looks like Nikon hire the Q10 group :D

Thanks for running well and supporting your thread!

I believe that size differences between those three bodies doesn't play too much role. They are three completely different camera propositions. The only common is that they are full frame.

The lens are not comparable though it will be interesting to compare body sizes and switch dials.

Will it be a game changer like the Sony A7/A7R?

Unlikely in the form factor or lens compatibility sense, however I think there are a lot of Nikon users who can afford it and were looking at the A7/A7R that will be happy to wait for this camera instead, despite the higher weight and size and in the business of making money this is where it counts.

So what is the small dial to the top-right of the viewfinder lens?

Looks kind of fat but it is expected. It'll take some adjustment time to me to get used to the proportions. From the back it looks like a mid range Nikon DSLR, but the top and front views are heavy in classic Nikon DNA. Good job overall!

The vertical front 'sub-command' dial would be for aperture in A and M mode, as per the Coolpix P7100. I found the dial on that camera to be quite usable, more so than the standard horizontal dial actually, so I see it as a positive. Helps keep the size of the grip more svelte too, I suppose.

is my guess.

Except for the dedicated AF-On button taken from the higher range DSLR's.
