TBA: HD PENTAX-DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR

Agreed -- that 20-40 profile would be a general service lens for most people. If it's in the spirit of the other ltd's, it would be all metal (WR could change that) and have a funky hood. I was hoping it would start at 16mm, but i guess not.
Yes. Most images is shot in that range. A nice high quality, compact standard zoom lens.

I guess the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

We'll have to wait and see. I would like to have seen a more bokeh-licious lens like a 20-35mm f2.0 or a 1.5x FL at f1.8. Seems a bit of a waste for a high end zoom at small FL's having such small aperture.
That is for another lens. Wait for the 18-70/2.8. Limited lenses are about small size and high quality. I like the idea that a high end zoom that is not very fast. Many demanding users don't need fast or big and heavy lenses. To me high-end has nothing to do with speed but with image and built quality.

I'll watch this with interest. I have the FA31, 43 and 77 but as long as the 20-40 is sharp wide open at 20mm then it will work nicely for wider shots at concerts but the bonus will be if Pentax bring out a K-01 replacement then this will be a superb travel lens. I could pack the DA20-40 + FA77 for a small, sharp travel lens kit.

I go for the Q08, if it come with a wide aperture(~f2.0)and cost less than Q06.

What will this DA Limited zoom lens offer over the DA* 16-50mm f2.8?
Small size, the 16-50 is pretty big, obviously a different build for those of us who prefer the Limited lens build, and hopefully a focus motor that doesn't quit working for no apparent reason.

I'm impressed at the idea of metal construction and weather sealing. Metal expands and contracts with temperature more than plastic. I suspect that some very serious tolerance engineering went into this lens, and, having gone to that length, I can't imagine they would let it be anything other than excellent optically as well. I predict a clear win for Pentax on this lens.

They already have experience with Metal and Weather sealing with the DFA 100mm Macro WR and i can assure you that it has nothing to envy to the DA* lenses in bad weather !

It's become pretty obvious then that a large number of users have a definite need for a small, high quality, WR zoom lens. Many of us are not in need of a huge zoom range (or as much as we can get), and many of us use other lenses for shallow DoF operations.

With this response we see it's not a foolish ambition by Ricoh to market and produce such a lens. Horses for courses!

It's entirely achievable just as it was with the various WR Pentax metal bodies.

What will this DA Limited zoom lens offer over the DA* 16-50mm f2.8?
Fair question. My bet: size, better motor and edge-edge sharpness.

I really liked my DA* 16-50 2.8, but it was fairly big. For outdoor walkabouts I always preferred to put on a small prime and 'see' at that FL, and the smaller size made that very enjoyable. While I liked the 16-50, I love the DA 35ltd macro for it's size and sharpness across the frame. (40ltd was similar, but I prefer the 35.)

Now, with this Ltd zoom, it's like having the 21, 35 and 40 with you, on the camera at once. Probably the same IQ, great, fast motor, WR... It makes sense to me, as long as the IQ is what we'd expect from a 'limited'.

I'd use it to take shots like:

I don't have that lens, but I'm sure the barrel moves with focus. If they've made that WR seal work well, I'm even more convinced that the new 20-40 will be a winner.

On the DFA100 Macro WR the barrel extends a lot out of the lens, but if you use the lens hood it moves inside the lens hood for added protection.

Then again it looks like a DA21 stuck on a DA40 !

I wonder what will be done for a lens hood - I don't see a sign of anything in the image of the lens.

Also, this is superfluous, but I like the design of the zoom ring - looks like a tasteful/respectful nod to the old focus rings of the Takumars.

That really does look like a nicely sized lens. If it is truly WR and DC, I will be saving for it. It would be a perfect WR complement to my DA*55 and DFA100 WR as a 3 lens walkabout kit. If it is sharp enough for the price....

HD DA Limiteds are now even more expensive than SMC Limiteds.

Then, how much HD DA Limited WR zoom will cost more than a HD Limited prime that doesn't have WR?

Don't be surprised if it rolls out at $1000.
