The a58 is, in many ways, a downgrade on the a57. It is really closer to an a37 replacement. I won't take you through all the specs - you can do that yourself, but I would say that, unless you absolutely must have the extra megapixels for cropping or poster printing, the a57 is a better camera.

I might need extra Mpx for croping since my major use will be birds pics which will need

some extra croping.

great! So you get the cam that fits your needs better for the lower price.

Its almost better in every aspect to the 58 which is 38 in my view. 57 is far better than 58. If you need better crop than go for 65/77 why waste money is 58, its not worthy anyway. I am 57 user.

PhotoclubAlpha tends to agree with that to a degree in their a58 review. They like the new sensor but pity the body shortcomings compared to the a57and a580. But saying the a58 is not worthy and a waste of money: I disagree. It depends on the main usage intended by the purchaser. And suggesting the a65 for better cropping without commenting on the ISO limitations of the aging, first Sony APS-C 24MP sensor in comparison to what they have achieved with the 20 MP sensor introduced via the a58, is actually somewhat misleading the OP.

I consider the 20MP sensor in the a58 a sweet spot for APS-C and would happily buy an a78 if it came with that chip. It is the 24 MP chip that stops me from buying the a77 even at its current, very appealing price point. It just does not add value to my current body line up (a700, a900, a55) which gives me 12, 16 and 24 MP with OVF, EVF, live view, and and sufficient hi ISO performance for my shooting needs.

Cheers,
Ralf

I look forward to the price of the @58 falling even further,
because for a dedicated wide angle/landscape body
it is looking seriously promising.

I know this is total guesswork on behalf of everyone (unless you work for a major retailer maybe!) but.... my daughter is angling for a DLSR for Christmas. She's used my a77 and obviously I'd prefer to buy a Sony for her as I've got plenty of glass etc. I've got an a580 as well which she "kind of" likes but its "not new" (kids eh). So, really at the moment that leaves the a58. In the UK I can get one with the kit for ~£319 +/- £10 depending if I use vouchers / would like more warranty / prefer to walk in to a shop I like to get it.

Do you reckon it'll drop before Christmas?
I notice it's not on the Sony cashback list which is annoying.

I tried both the A57 and A58, and ended up keeping the A57. The A58 may have marginally better IQ, but you can't tell unless you're pixel peeping. The A57 has a much better body, and feel substantial, where the A58 feels like cheap plastic, even the thumb rest isn't rubber anymore, and the speckled body is this horrible matte now. The LCD screen is 2.7" on the A58, and 3.0" on the A57 is stiff and difficult to move around, unlike the tilt & swivel of the A57. It also has a lot of noise when compared to the A57. Noise the moment you move into any unlit area (the A57 doesn't have this problem).

Sure, the A58 has better battery life, is lighter, and has a (barely) better EVF, but all of those things are negligible tbh. I get 500+ shots no problem with my A57, weight feels the same, and EVF is just as usable.

If the A58 hits $399 with the lens though, I wouldn't mind getting it as a backup cam that i can just throw around n not worry about.

I should have bought another A57 before the stock ran dry n market price went back up though.

The a57 is the better built, better performing camera.

The a58 has a few tiny advantages -- slightly better jpeg performance, slightly more resolution.

But the a57 has a better build, higher resolution and larger articulating LCD, and MUCH better burst shooting which is useless on the a58.
