No, it's not totally silent because it has moving parts. It has a motorized zoom lens and a mechanical shutter.

The real question is whether or not the noise it does make is more than you're willing to put up with. Probably not, but that's something that only you can really tell for sure.

It should have a soft click, not completely quiet. IMO, that is a good thing to let you know you just took an image without being noisy.

I like to shoot modern dance. There are times when the music is silent or very subtle. I hate myself when shooting (not as much as people around me hate me). Even with my 6D in silent mode I annoy people close to me position.

I can't find an answer to this problem. I had a G1X and I loved it for being so silent. But its slowness and blindness in bad light made it unusable in a theater, then the use of a dslr like the 6D.

Any ideas? I was thinking about the RX10 as a possible solution. The 1" sensor may or may not be enough. All other features I still have to wait for real tests.

This is a bit facetious, I know, but perhaps the answer to your problem is to shoot video instead of stills. It'd probably better capture the sense of the dance, as well...

I have a question: can one take a still picture from a video fragment or during video recording ? thanks.

I think what you may be hearing is this shutter sound effect, which seems to be on by default. When it's off the shutter sound is the faintest of snicks - see the comparison demonstrated here:

It's the same with my RX100M2 - I have 'Audio Signals' turned of and you can only hear the actual shutter sound faintly in a quiet room.

The leaf shutters on these cameras is very quiet - nothing like the loud click you get from DSLR/M43/NEX. I would anticipate the RX10 to be no different.

I don't know why Sony felt the need to add a sound effect - a quiet shutter is actually useful.

If it helps, I understand the Panasonic Lumix GX7 has a totally silent mode with electronic shutter; that's a micro4/3 camera.

I have been using the Nikon System 1 V2 (with electronic viewfinder) with interchangeable lenses for concerts and theatricals, also a 1 inch CMOS, like the RX100 and RX10. Its electronic shutter is totally silent, and can take up to 15fps in RAW at 14M pixel, all in absolute silence. Panasonic GX7 with a bigger sensor also has a silent mode but the max ISO is 1600 when in silent mode. I use the Nikon 1 lens 10-100 VR (X 2.7 therefore becomes a 27-270), and with the Nikon 1 adaptor, can use any Nikon F mount manuel or AF lenses with AF and VR function, so my 70-200/2.8 VR becomes handy, but must use a tripod as it becomes a 190-540/2.8. My Sony RX1 is completely silent, but the 35mm is too wide for theatrical close ups. I heard the new A7 does not have a silent shutter.

If the shutter on RX10 is similar to quiet shutter on my Sony F828 (a very soft, faint click to acknowledge image captured), the sound would be hardly obtrusive. However, if you want something completely silent as if nothing happened (as during videos), not even that will work.

I don't expect totally silent like in video. My ex- Canon GiX was silent enough for my needs. I've thought about Nikon 1 V2 but I don't know about the low-light capabilities. The Gx7 would be nice if it delivers good AF and have a bigger sensor.

The RX10 video seems encouraging. We'll see.

Thanks guys.

That all depends on what lens you put in front of the GX7. If you're into fast primes, then yes it would perform better than an RX10. But if you're just going to put an f/3.5-5.6 zoom on a GX7 you would be much better of with an RX10.
