Micro Four Thirds 54 million
Good stuff!

Can you put the above in a context?

Like comparing with
  • phones
  • P&S
  • DSLR
  • Other
It would be even more interesting if the (time) trends of the stats could be determined.

Thanks

I could drill down into the segments but Flickr has mirrorless listed as point and shoot and DSLR not their own segment, also it needs to be weighted or broken down as to when cameras were launched etc, maybe someone with more time on their hands....

Micro Four Thirds has 60% of the images taken by mirrorless cameras on Flickr with Sony taken up 31% and Pentax, Nikon, Canon, Fuji etc taking up 9% between them....

The GF1 seems still quite popular...but they only have the GX1 as the other m43 in the top 10. Very poor showing compared to Olympus. I think this shows that Panasonic really came out with boring bodies (until the GX7). The E-M5 is the top for Olympus and they have eight m43 bodies in the top 10. Quite a difference. But Canon crushes both Olympus and Canon combined.

Well to give you a rough idea...

DSLRs

Canon 300-600D range, Kiss 1-5 600m

Phones

All Apple iphones 250m

P&S

Canon's most popular - Digital Ixus 90 30m

Sony RX100 5.3 million images and high activity factor
Yes who would have thought it? Just about the most expensive P+S also has more people uploading more images to Flickr than any other P+S model.

What this shows is that (1) the high end of P+S is actually doing quite well and (2) as it overlaps pricewize with mirrorless it also competes with mirrorless. So the new Panasonic GM1 is competing as much with the RX100, X100s, Fuji X20 as it is with the EP-L or EP-M.

You can see that in the Fuji stats. Fuji might only have 2% of the mirrorless market based on the XE-1 and X-PRO-1 stats but if you throw in the X100 and X100s (both over US$1k for a P&S) as well as the Fuji X20 and Fuji X10, then the average number of members uploading to Flickr outnumbers Olympus with their top 6 mirrorless cams.

The best thing to do would be to delete this complete thread.

I did a bit of searching to find the GH3 in the statics and where I would be able to contact flickr about this. All I found is chaos, and for this reason the statistics published are absolutely worthless. If the GH3 is not found then we have to ask what other cameras are being omitted.

Well that is one way of looking at it I suppose.

But as 99% of posts on DPR are based on opinions, I prefer facts that are imperfect rather than no facts at all.

And, of course, there is also the possibility that the Panasonic GH3 Flickr group

http://www.flickr.com/groups/gh3/

With 202 members and 3000 photos is actually too small to register on the grid at all!!

3000 photos taken by 202 members of the group, what about the photos on non-members ?

Statistics are wonderful fun, but as GeorgianBay1939 points out, we need better statistics to have a better time. Especially we need comparative analysis of formats over time - five years would be nice. We need good and consistent data collection categories too - why is a GF1 a point and shoot, and the E-M5 a DSLR?

It is striking just how many more of the photos taken and placed on Flickr are Canon shots compared to m4/3rds. Nikon might be the same but hypothetically a bit less. This is one reason why we need data over time - to see trends.

Well all I am saying is that if you go Flickr and search for images from the Panasonic GH3. You then sort the images by 'most recent' all you find is 1 photo that was dated yesterday. The second photo was dated the day before.

So, you have to at least entertain the possibility that the GH3 is not included in the statistics because it is not statistically significant.

I've been shooting Panasonic for near 6 years and been on Flickr for the same, as I previously pointed that on Flickr stats as far as Panasonic models listings go they they tend to lag behind other manufacturers for some reasons, the GH3 will turn up and with upto date stats....

Flickr includes Apple cameras with an average of 1 daily user.... http://www.flickr.com/cameras/apple

The Panasonic GH3 Flickr group has a reasonable amount of members and photos http://www.flickr.com/groups/gh3/ along with http://www.flickr.com/groups/panasonic_four_thirds/

also http://vimeo.com/groups/gh3 is quite active...

By the way, I am not asking the originator of this thread to do all this data gathering. It is an interesting thread. We always want more: a bit of limited information can tease and tantalize - and sometimes obscure.

I can't figure the value of this report. I have thousands of images I've taken with a Canon M, and NONE of them are on Flickr.

None of the pictures I've taken with any camera are on Flickr...... Probably thousands of other photographers can say the very same thing.

YouDidntDidYou wrote:

The ranking you show is for activity factor not images taken.Olympus and Panasonic compare better in that regard over Canon meaning their users are getting more use and enjoyment out if their cameras (smart phones score highly in images taken, check apple and Samsung).

If you look at Canon and Nikon's stats for images taken their older cameras score highly suggesting their best days are behind them...
I doidn't bother but I bet if you look for D7000, D5200, 60D, 650D, you'll see they still beat all or almost all mirrorless.

I do think these statistics throw some light on recent mirrorless sales figures. CIPA stats for the first 8 months show mirrorless shipments down 19% compared to an 18% fall in DSLRs. CIPA defines a 'mirrorless' or 'DSLR' by the fact it has an interchangeable lens. Fixed lens camera fall under compacts and sales are down 45%.

We can see, however, there is a proportion of the very high end (over US$500) compact market (which is relatively new) and which is doing very well. Cameras such as....

RX100 5312k (images) 445 (users)

X100 3058k 265

X100s 662k 244

X10 2155k 182

And these numbers compare very well with some of the more popular mirrorless cameras....

EP-L5 679k 104

Nex 6 1769k 254

Now I doubt that they represent a large percentage of the total compact market (roughly 45m units 2013) - perhaps 5-10% - but they are a much bigger % of its value. And the growth of this segment explains the average 19% rise in compact prices this year. And still say 3m units might have increased 1m units this year.

Conversely mirrorless sales will fall about 18% or 800,000 units. In fact the high end compact market is simply substituting for mirroless - most people would consider an X100 and a mirrorless camera anyway. And I suspect most people buying an RX100 are choosing it over a small mirrorless camera. And of course Panny's GM1 is classed as a mirrrorless but to a large extent is competing with the RX100 or Fuji X20.

One imagines the Flickr data is heavily bias to the US where mirrorless ILC sales have been particularly disappointing. It looks as though people have been picking up high end fixed lens (mirrorless?) cameras instead.
