D610? What about the D600?

I probably won't sell or get rid of my D600, but I understand the frustration and it seems there are many owners who have had theirs in for repair more than once and the chamber oil splatter is still there. With that in mind, this must feel like a slap in the face. But then, these kinds of things have happened many times in the past and with every vendor - overly dirty sensors, banding in shadows, focusing issues etc. etc. etc. Nikon have been good about receiving the units for repair, but is that enough? How many times do you have to send it back to get it right?

As an update - I have to say that I initially thought mine was doing great. But after several actuations, I have the splatters again. One good cleaning seemed to get rid of them though. We'll see if they return.

But for me, the D610 feels like a slap in the face - I have a unit that may never be right and therefore unsellable. And even if mine was good, who will buy it? I plan to keep it anyhow, but geez. I guess in the long run, the spots diminish and two or three cleanings isn't a big deal before it does, but still.

What should Nikon do here folks? I think they'll happily replace shutters all day long before they're willing to recall defective D600s.

Those with problem who have send their unit(s) for fix w/o success should push Nikon for replacement with D610.

I think that would be a good idea, but how would we go about that?

Call them and ask for it. Lots of companies offer replacement after three try or so. Some even offer refund.

I totally agree - if the D610 is actually "fixed". I did say this in one of my latest post. :

"I for one am not sure that the D610 will not have the same problem - my rationale would be if the D610 shutter mechanism does not have the debris and oil problem, it would be logical that Nikon would have used this to fix the problem on the D600 currently being repaired or "cleaned".

I have had my D600 shutter mechanism replaced 2X!!!! and it still showing some debris or oil spots!!!

I hope I am wrong in this - but I will wait for the final verdict on the 610 before I do something with my D600. If the D610 is without this problem, ideally I would like to see some mechanism to transition from my D600 to the D610. Perhaps a "trade-in for a fee" or something like that.. "

It remains to be seen.

I found the behavior of my new shutter to somewhat surprising. It took about 1000 actuations to show the spots. I did more actuations and cleaned at about 3000. They have mostly stayed away. I have a few random ones here and there right now that I'm not interested in cleaning. It seems normal now. If I end up cleaning it twice in the next few weeks, and it's generally staying clean, I'm leaving it alone.

The D610 could be a real dud and people might actually be crying, "I wish I had my old D600." See what Copper Hill says: (Written before, or after the D600?)

"5) CHAMBER LUBRICANT - the new bane of D-SLRs. Manufacturers are using more and more lightweight oil on the moving parts and when you take a shot, it sometimes gets splattered on your sensor's surface. And once you have a buildup of this lubricant, it only follows that loose dust specks will be cemented into this goo. So it's not just a dust problem, it's a dust/lubricant problem."

and:

"The biggest challenge any sensor cleaning tool will face is chamber lube splattered on the sensor,"

I think we should wait for couple of months and be patient with our pessimism or optimism....how good the D610 is. I'm waiting for D710 :>)....maybe it will arrive at around 2050.

Nikon's new release certainly disses the D600 owners....and understandably so.

You are not alone.

Direct from the horse's mouth:

"Dear Mr.------,

Thank you for choosing Nikon. As per your e-mail yes your shutter was replaced. As to your second question there is no trade in or vouchers offer programs for the D 610 camera."

Live today, enjoy what you have got now. D7xx is far & away.

is the shutter they use in repairing D600s the same as the new one in the D610? Will they ever acknowledge that? I doubt they will ever do it. I'd sell a D600 asap and wait to see if D610 is actually w/o issues.
