K-3´s mysterious bump

Actually, it looks to me like a 'training' connector.....like in RC transmitters were the instructor has one transmitter and the student the other one. So if u 'loose control' of this high powered camera the instructor can take over and bring it under control... ;)

I'm guessing like everybody else.

To me, the "plug" at the end of the hump has the appearance of a hard plastic, not a soft rubber, and is not intended for removal by anybody other than a service person. I don't think it is intended for consumer use because, contrary to other port covers, it appears to not have any easy means for removal with one's fingers. If my theory is correct, it's not for anything you as a consumer/user would often plug into the camera.

So, what would at times require access for repair/service/adjustment? A mirror drive motor (seems plausible)? An antenna (doubtful I think)? I can't think of much else, but maybe my imagination is stunted.

Daryl

Maybe a useless thread, but anyway (just for boring) I would like to speculate about the bump at the side of the supposed new K-3. My bet is that it is for housing an audio plug for mic or earphones, as you can see in the first pic something like a door, like a rubber cap.

PS: IMHO some uglyness came from the non-uniform lens and hood shape

The most interesting thing in this pic to me is the button above the MF/AF selector that says "AF Mode" if I reads how I think it reads.

Also the protrusion on the camera appears to be a thumb rest, allow the thumb to hold the camera by being under this large protrusion (and some fingers of course). The K-5 was a step down from the K10/20 bodies in its grip on the left side. I used this grip many times, but can't with the K5. This placement will allow easy finger and thumb support IMO, but who knows...

One thing for sure, the camera phone or software used to distort the bejabbers out of the new camera is pretty wacked. Note the very different view, especially the angle of the mode dial. It'll look much more normal with undistorted normal images when the camera is finally outed.

If that really DOES turn out to be the "K-3," anyone who feels like buying me one for "purely experimental purposes," I'll be more than happy to take a hammer to that side of it and find out exactly what's underneath that hump. Maybe that's where it stores its fat reserves, like a camel?

GAWD I hope that's a HOAX picture!

This is a final picture, only bad angle of view :-D
And again, under the "big thing" is the headphone connect ;-)

You're the "Man", Asahi. I'll take your word for it. I'm glad you're here at times to calm us down, and at other times to get us excited.

Seriously, I think it's the cable release port like the one in the Pentax film camera such as the MZ-S. Even the K-1 prototype has such port.

This lump is a clear case of digital mumps in the early stages. It's caused by internal electronic feature overload, but can be avoided by keeping things simple.

Hi,

If it's got an 8.5 fps rapid fire rate maybe the mirror has two motors, one to raise it and one lower it again.

Are you sure about that? About the headphone connection being there, I mean - IMO it doesn't looks like an user removable cover.

But who knows, probably they had to move some connector anyway...

That would be nice, an external screen accessory, articulated, for live view and video, 6 inches, iphone resolution... and maybe a video button on the back (so that it can get that gold award)!

Sorry,sorry.....but....it is a very simple thing.....

High end headphone port, that´s all ;-)
Since you say so, i believe it! It's been fun speculating though! Lol!
best regards

p.s.:the really plus point is the complete new af system.....nothing to do with the current Pentax autofocus :-)
That is a BIIIIIG plus! :)

I for one am glad Pentax isn't wasting precious space on a video record button. I don't understand the reviewers fixation on video record buttons.

The K20 was good for the grip on the left side. I have an L-bracket on K5 and really like the extra grip room it provides. With the L-bracket, the K5 is same width as K20.

As far as the bump...

It is the spout to dispense coffee. The cap is not hard plastic designed to not be regularly opened by the user, it is hard plastic designed to be like a Thermos. If there is any kind of audio whatnot involved, I believe it will be audio adrenaline.

I just hope it pours well. How is it so easy to make a spout that can't pour with out dribbles ?

Either this, or the hump houses a small cow bell.

You cannot easily bury a GPS antenna in the metal body of an SLR, so it has to stick out somewhere so it has a clear view of the satellites.

Because it is still only APS-C this K-3 needs to have serious "bells and whistles" if it is to compete.
