S45 image orientation no longer works?

To make a long story short, I had to download and install the S45 WIA driver version 5.05 for Windows XP. Now when I transfer pictures from the camera to my computer, vertically oriented shots no longer come across as vertical. They do show as vertical when displayed on the camera however. Any ideas?

I take a lot of vertical shots, and viewing them with my head tilted like I'm eating a taco is not fun. I can't rotate them in the WinXP image viewer, because that degrades the quality. I realize I can do it in PhotoShop, and save at maximum jpeg quality, but even that results in a little loss. What do I do?
Thanks,
-Jack

Oh you poor baby! WinXP has native lossless image rotation available when using the thumbnail view....And there are any number of other freeware and shareware programs available that will also do lossless rotation..

Not at 4mp it doesn't. I get a warning message that quality will be reduced, even in thumbnail view.

got a recommendation?

anyone else got some better advice?

You probably know that ZoomBrowser rotates the images when they are transferred if it senses that rotation is enabled in the image. This function is set in the S45 menu.

If you are not using ZB for transfer, you can still rotate images after the transfer. Open ZB to the folder with the images, select and rotate them via the rotation button on top. If the images have been edited, ZB will sometimes produce a warning of quality loss. Another option, in the tools, preferences menu, you can select to rotate the original or (create and) rotate a copy.

I thought this was a function in the cam that changes this orientation?

wish I could help, all I know is that I use a cardreader to download to adobe album and they all appear upright.

Yeah, I don't use ZB though. Just don't like it. I do have image rotation on in the camera. Vertical shots used to come across as vertical with the old driver, but they don't with the new driver. I actually just found my old driver disc, I thought I had lost it. So I'll try that.

BTW, do you know if rotating the original in the camera is lossless?
Thanks,

Folks....

The S45 does not rotate images in the camera. All it does is set a tag in the EXIF data to indicate the orientation the camera was in when the picture was taken.

With the EXIF data orientation set, software can:
  • Display the photo correctly (but not change the actual file)
  • Perform a rotation (usually losses) on the actual file, and re-write the file.
Note that the JPEG files contain both the actual image data and a thumbnail. You would normally want the orientation of both to be the same (I think!)

First... Some camera downloading software have the option of automaticaly rotating the image based the embedded EXIF orientation information. I use Downloader Pro by Breezebrowser, which does this (and I use this option).

This does a lossless rotation of the actual file. Downloader Pro is smart enough to re-write the Orientatation data back to "none", and rotate the thumbnail so that downstream software does not get confused!

Next.... Some image viewing/browsing software has the option to display the image based on the EXIF orientation information. (BreezeBrowser has this option). In this case the actual file is not re-written, just the display is changed.

Finally, Some viewing/browsing software software allows you to batch rotate the files based on the EXIF orienttation tag.

Stupid Newbie Move: After getting used to taking lots of photos in a portriat orientation, I proceeded to try taking movies on my S45... you guessed it... in a portrait orientation! Hmm... if I turn my laptop sideways..... Oh Well..

The other day I was sitting in the basement fooling around with my S45. I took a pic of the TV to see how it turned out. When I looked at the shot on the lcd. the image was rotated 90 degress. I deleted it and tryed it again, same thing it was on its side. I still can not figure that out.

Did the old driver work?

I've tried the old and new drivers on my new Vaio (XP Pro, SP1 preinstalled) and neither rotate on this machine. The old drivers still rotate properly on my desktop. So I suspect some change in XP which has broken the functionality.

I've tried Canon's tech support in the UK, but they don't seem to be in any hurry to reply...

Nope, switched to the old driver, and images still do not rotate. I should add that this loss of rotation ability also coincided with a format and rebuild of my hard drive, with a fresh load of XP. I had this done at the Gateway store, because my machine is still under warranty. Maybe they loaded some slightly newer version of XP.

Just to tidy up loose ends:-

Canon tech support still haven't replied.

but...

The driver now seems to work. I don't know what changed. It may have been that I installed ZoomBrowser (although I think that I had installed it and still had problems), or it may be that I rebooted (I don't often). I notice that Windows now calls the camera Canon S45 # 2, suggesting that something has changed, but I don't know what.

Ho hum.

Incident ID: 197471

I have an S45. 2 computers with XP Pro, upgraded to SP1, have worked fine. With my new Vaio Z1 (XP Pro SP1 preinstalled) the windows scanner and camera wizard does not display the images correctly rotated, nor are they rotated on download.

I am using the drivers from k3408enx.exe, which I downloaded recently, but now I cannot find any s45 drivers on your site.
Where have the drivesr gone?
How can I have the images rotated?
Why does this web page keep on disappearing, forcing me to retype this text?
Thanks

Incident Number 197441

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding your Canon product

From the information you have given us, it would appear that you are using the Windows xp scanner and camera wizard to download your images, I recommend using zoombrowser ex which will allow the correct orientation to be downloaded.

The camera will need to be set to a communication mode of normal and NOT set to PTP.

I would also suggest setting the camera to auto rotate - on

A WIA driver will be required which should have been loaded from the Canon solution disk provided with the camera.

Go into the Zoombrowser program and select Tools from the menu bar. Select Preferences and then Rotation - select either rotate original JPEG image or Rotate a copy of the JPEG image - the later will give a duplicate one rotated and another not rotated once the images are downloaded to the harddisk.

When connecting with the camera setup in communication mode set to normal, the WIA driver should activate displaying an event - if a scannor and camera wizard appears close this and then select zoombrowser ex from the event. Or alternatively select Zoombrowser from the desktop and select Camera or Memory card - choose download image - a film strip will appear showing the images, select the ones you wish to download and follow the prompts to download to your desired location.

We hope this information is of use to you. However, should you require any further technical assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us quoting your Incident number.

Frankly if this is the best you can do for web support you shouldn't bother. Several days to give a reply that doesn't address my problem (the WIA driver used to rotate during download, now it doesn't - I don't want to use Zoombrowser), and no way of replying to say that you have not solved my problem.

The problem seems to have resolved itself - I have not reinstalled anything but it now works. I am replying only to let you know that there is a problem here - your WIA driver is broken in some way with respect to Windows XP SP1. I know there is some issue because the camera now says PowerShot S45 #2. I'm a software engineer, so I know a problem when I see one, and you may like point your developers to the discussion at http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=5214847 - I am not the only one to have seen this issue.
