I know that this isn't the place to mention it but I finally made the DSLR plunge. I ordered a 10D tonight and will be getting it early next week.

Congrats! I'm jealous. The lens thing is really overwhelming to those of us who have no clue about the things. How do you decide what lenses to get? Just looking at the catalogs it seems like you could spend easily double the price of the body for a minimal set. Cindy

Hey cUrVe,

I'm pretty excited about it since I haven't had an SLR in quite a few years and I have played a bit with a few 10D's. I'm starting with a 28-135 IS and a 50mm prime (f1.8) but I'm sure I'll be oggling a 17-35mm in short order...

Hi Cindy,

Lenses are complicated so I have been researching for months on what people like most for the price. I know the basic ranges I want but then had to find which specific ones I wanted. I tried out a friends 10D with a 28-135mm (similar range to the F7x7) and the speed of the camera is crazy. The AF is fast enough to track an object at 50mph and remain in focus....

Congratulations Andrew. Keep us posted of your experience with the 10D. I know there are many of us who are thinking of this but haven't taken the plunge yet. How about size? Do you feel like the camera is light enough and easy enough to carry around? Ann

I think for the technical info I'll be getting beaten up in the Canon SLR forum but for the more theoretical and historical stuff, I'll be cruising here occasionally like I have been for the last 2-3 years. I can't just leave and miss out on the drama in here...

Where will Shay move next?
How will Jim's studio gig turn out?
Will we ever see a picture of Uly?
How many girls does Yehuda actually know?

Like the sands of time...

Hey Ann,

The F707 was already pretty bulky so this will be no worse. My goal is to one day have the DSLR AND a small pocket-sized 5-6Mp camera. Since I do like to travel relatively light, I can see my 28-135mm coming off rarely unless I have something more specific in mind.

on how and what you shoot...

i have no real use for long telephoto lenses so a 17-35 and a 28-70 would suit my style just fine... + a nice macro lens would be nice too... just as a comparison those 3 lenses don't even cover what the 7x7 lens does except the 7x7 is a bit shy on the wide angle end of things but has more reach on the long end of things...

others who shoot wildlife/action/landscapes need the reach of a telephoto lens and/or a real wide angle lens... i love wide angle lenses but with digital it's kinda hard... nikkor is supposed to be releasing a 12-24 which would give me an 18mm wide angle equivalent...

i know this probably all sounds confusing to someone not familiar with the old ways...

Yes it is confusing, and it would be a pain to change lenses all the time. But to get a camera with the speed Andrew mentioned and at least the option to get some real zoom . . .

AVB,

Congrats on the new purchase. If anyone can coax great images out of that camera, you can. Although, I'm not sure that it will be able to catch Bela in his/her glory (running through the water) unless you get the underwater housing ;-)

Again, congrats and good luck and like others have said, PLEASE keep us informed. There are some of us who may eventually follow your lead :-)
Ughhh, it even hurts to type that...lol

Oooh, I'm excited for you... I spent longer than I should have at work researching lenses today. I think my time is near as well.

Anxious to hear your impressions!

Hey AVB,

I was thinking I'd just get the 50mm 1.4 USM prime for $300 and then kind of let my needs dictate what other lenses I would get. The only other one that I did think of was teh 28-135. My main question is how much better the L series of lenses are? From what you've heard, are they even close to worth the additional $,$$$? I think I could get by with a 28-135 for a very, very long time before I felt the necessity to get a different lens (want maybe, but necessity no).

I've just heard such great things about the 50 mm 1.4 (NOT the 1.8 which doesn't impress me).

Congrats again!! I'm probably a month out, but I can't wait....

there's a few of us Sony/10D users here...you're gonna love your new camera. The speed is unbelievable when you come from the Sony, and the silky, smoothness of the images is just fantastic. The only possible downside (besides the $$$ of course) is the size--no where near as portable or inconspicuous as the Sony.

I hope it exceeds all your expectations. Just watch out for the highly contagious lens fever, especially the "L" lens fever (which can really hurt the wallet).

I still hang around this forum--there's no other quite like it.

Cheers,
Mike

Andrew,

Congratulations on your new 10D! You will enjoy it! I bought the 10D May 15 and I really love it. I mentioned it in the post comparing the 10D to the 717. I'm keeping my 717 and I found that I like having both. We've been camping the last two weekends and I used the 717 for infrared and for the RED SURFACES challenge. I took quite a few shots at Lake George with the 10D- around 8PM...

http://www.pbase.com/roberta/canon_10d

I bought the 28-135 IS USM lens and it's great. I would love to buy the 100mm f 2.8 Macro...eventually! Then I will consider the Sigma 15-30.

Keep us posted. The weight isn't bad at all. I've got my Lowepro backpack and sometimes I talk hubby into carrying my tripod!

What I have found out about lenses so far:
I was thinking I'd just get the 50mm 1.4 USM prime for $300 and
then kind of let my needs dictate what other lenses I would get.
Apparently the 1.4 is not worth the additional cost over the 1.8 which is so much cheaper. You don't really get much more speed with the additional light.
The only other one that I did think of was teh 28-135. My main
question is how much better the L series of lenses are? From what
you've heard, are they even close to worth the additional $,$$$?
The biggest plus with the L lenses is that they are often much faster lenses and about as close to perfect optically as you will find. Personally, I think I would only buy L glass if I was independantly wealthy, making a ton of money doing nothing but photography, or found a really good deal.
I think I could get by with a 28-135 for a very, very long time
before I felt the necessity to get a different lens (want maybe,
but necessity no).
I am with you on this. Apparently the 28-135IS is one of the most worthwhile lenses out there. The IS is the kicker, make sure you get it. I also really want the Sigma 17-35 since I'm a big WA fan. The Sigma has been getting rave reviews and is an excellent buy.
I've just heard such great things about the 50 mm 1.4 (NOT the 1.8
which doesn't impress me).
I'd like to hear more about this since I heard the opposite.
Congrats again!! I'm probably a month out, but I can't wait....
Let me know what you end up doing.
