There is some interesting bit of info in the EM-1 manual. According to the description of HDR on page 59 in addition to HDR1 and HDR2 modes there are 5 bracketed modes as following: 3F 2.0EV, 5F 2.0EV, 7F 2.0EV, 3F 3.0EV, 5F 3.0EV. However, the AE bracketing says that the adjustments can be only 0.3EV, 0.7EV, and 1.0EV, just like on EM-5. The manual does not mention if 7 frames bracket is limited to 0.7EV this time or not.

So, now the question - what exactly is the interpretation of that 5F 3.0EV: 5 frames separated by 3 stops, or by 1.5 stops (+-3), or by 0.75 stops (3 total)? In the first case it would be one of the widest if not the widest available bracketing range on a digital camera. In the last, it's meh. The thing is 7F 2.0EV and 5F 3.0EV in that context kinda suggest the wide separation and six extra stops total. Six stops on the top of already very good dynamic range would make this the best camera for HDR out there (yes, more can be done manually but that's not the point). That said, there are some other factors that may spoil the feature (like EM-5 slightly misbehaving on blues occasionally causing odd sky artifacts).

Correction: twelve extra stops, not six. A little absent-minded today, must be Monday.

I would take 5 frames at 3EV to mean -6.0, -3.0, 0, +3.0, +6.0. Same for 7 frames at 2EV to be -6, -4, -2, 0, 2, 4, 6. Max range being -6 to +6.

You are looking at the E-PL5/E-PM2/E-PL6/E-P5/E-M1 bracketing modes, where one shutter press can deliver a bunch of images according to Shooting Menu 2 bracketing choice.

Here's my E-PL5 screen.....

They are indeed separated by the numbers shown, so 5 at 2EV for instance has -4, -2, 0, +2, +4 as the group for a total of 8 EV spread.

I played with it but found that single shot HDR (if needed) works OK for me using Silkypix on the RAW.

Regards...... Guy

Thanks! So, up to 12 stops of extra range, really nice. No idea why it is so rare to include wide bracketing, it's all done in software. Looks like it's becoming standard for Olympus, I just realized that E-PL5 and E-PM2 have the same feature. I don't expect them to retrofit it to E-M5 at this point.

Somehow I missed that point -- I have E-M5 so these cameras did not interest me as potential upgrades. E-M1 is another story, really tempted to make a jump. The only thing that stops me is no preorder on the kit in the US -- I will definitely be getting the new 12-40. The primes are excellent but there are situation when a zoom is required and 12-40 seems to fit the bill.

I'm waiting for the kit, too. I am surprised how many DPReview posters I've heard say that....I wonder if Olympus is listening.......

I think the reason they're not offering the kit just yet is because they seem to be offering the body first, as early as the first week of October. The lens availability is less certain ranging from late October to December. And a kit of the two would no doubtedly ship when the lens is available as a stand alone, so maybe not until December.

I myself couldn't wait that long, sure I would love to save $200, but at least for me because I don't have the MMF-3 adapter, to get that free with a purchase of he body is good enough for me. I'm sure if you already have the adapter you would be more upset of the price difference.

The better question should be, would you be ok with saving $200 but having to wait until Decmeber to get it?
Yes, I would. I have a fully functional EM-5 and an RX-1. I really only want/need the EM-1 as my "primary" and will (after I get it) use the EM-5 as a second/backup body. Until my next overseas trip (not until next summer) I really can live without the backup. So I'm not in a huge hurry. I've even toyed with just getting a second EM-5 (or even a GX-7).
