Portraits with 5dmkIII - C&C welcome

Thanks for posting the higher resolution sample.

Two versions. They are not meant to be better than yours, just different.

Thanks for letting me play with them. Hope, Michael likes. :)

PS, you didn't fail, both are lovely portraits. Here and there few things can be changed, but that doesn't mean that those changes are necessarily better. Now you know what some learned members of this forum think about them. Take what you like from those suggestions, we will never agree on everything and it makes photography interesting.

I am sorry to say in my opinion as a professional photographer, both images leave a great deal to be desired. Please forgive me. You chopped off both heads, and the first image appears VERY out of focus or soft on my monitor. Good luck.

I find no problem with the crop, but agree with the un-sharpness of the girl.

Thanks for editing these. They look great!

Opinions do make life more interesting and appreciate all of them here. I will do a repeat with the kids and see how I can improve things.

You have a very interesting Flickr site by the way. Nice work.

I visited your site too. Great collection there. I especially liked Snow in Chicago, Kathleen's picture next to it, single plane shot in monochrome and the balloon picture. Rest are beautiful too.

BTW, my proper site has more than 3000 pictures, so I avoid giving a link here.

Girl head is cutoff to much. Nothing is wrong with cutting off the head like with the boy but it is just too much and it should be more space on the right too. Also, at the distance you had your camera you should have used F5.6 so both eyes would be in focus. There is nothing wrong if one eye in focus and the other is not but if you position face flat it does not look sharp. Light is a little too flat too.

Boy's photo is great actually except he should have been at the right just like the girl or in the center.

Chopping of the top of the head is an artistic choice which some people (I'm one) like, while others don't. You know the hair is there, you don't need to see all of it and the tighter crop allows you to get in closer on the face.

Having said that I think that cropping on the forehead/below the hair line (image one) doesn't work very well. That, plus the softness issue means I much prefer the second image where you cropped above the forehead/hairline.
