EM1 vs EM5 on Camera Size Comparison website.

Camer Size Comparison now has the EM1 in their system. This is a link to a comparison in size and weight between the EM1 and the EM5

As I suspected, the EM1 falls right in between the two. Since I have handled the EM5 and the GH3 it gives me a reference point. The EM5, even with horizontal grip was a just a bit too small for my comfort and hands. The GH3 was just a little big. So if all goes well, the EM1 should be just about right. From appearances, ergonomics also look just about right for the EM1, but I won't be able to tell until I get a chance to actually handle one.

And just for fun, all three together with lenses, from the top. Unfortunately they don't yet have the Oly 12-40 F2.8 in their database. Maybe soon

I have the GH3 and OM-D, both with grip, and happy with both. As you pointed out, the new Oly fits between them somewhere. I am also surprised at how much bigger in size and weight the EM1 is over the EM5.
 
If you add the optional grip to the EM5, it will measure (height and length) almost identical to the EM1. The weight will be the same.

One of the disappointments that they did not use that extra weight and space in the grip for bigger battery - unlike Panasonic with GH3.

A better visual comparison can be seen on Ming Thein's review. He's lined up the EM-5 with the horizontal grip next to the EM-1. They're almost exactly the same height. The EM-1 is a smidgen wider. He also shows both with the vertical grip. Again, they're very similar in size except the EM-1 is a little wider. I ALWAYS have my horizontal grip on the EM-5. It's just too small and difficult to hold without it. I expect the gripless EM-1 will feel very similar in size and weight to that configuration.

The EM-1 seems to be getting lots of kudos for ergonomics, which wasnt the case for the EM-5.

I agree. And design the horizontal grip so it could hold 2 batteries. But as much as I would have liked that, it isn't a major issue for me.

Coincidentally, the new Pro O12-40 has exactly the same dimensions as the first generation P14-140 lens. So you can easily compare size; just not "the look."

Looks like the E-M1 is the same size as the Em-5 with a RSS grip attached.

to those of my GH2s - over two hours of non-stop video from one battery! Before, I use to worry about losing power when shooting from an unattended tripod; now, I must remember to put in a large-enough card.

Of course, if Oly had done that, then we would be seeing threads complaining about non-compatibility with the previous OMD batteries... with good third-party batteries at about $30 (B&H for GH3), I don't see an issue.
 
As a lot of us do, they're about the same size.

Still very small. As are the lenses.

(I say ironic, because some mirrorless enthusiasts carry on about DSLRs being big, bulky, and heavy, compared to mirrorless.)
 
It seems almost a law of nature that new versions of products must become larger and larger and that the original value of compactness will be forgotten as manufacturers seek to cram more features into each successive product generation to justify a new purchase to customers. I love the small size of the EM-5 (even at the possible cost of handling) and wouldn't think to add to its bulk with the add-on grip. The additional size of the EM-1 is the primary reason I won't consider buying that camera. I hope the replacement for the EM-5 retains its smaller dimensions.

I think you're confused. Very few people assess a camera alone. That's kinda pointless. I've seen a few people comparing camera + 1 lens, which is also kinda pointless, imo. To do it properly, you need to compare systems, or the usual array of stuff that you carry.

Oh come on now. Mirrorless is a system, and as it develops, it covers a wider range of functionality....This camera is designed to be compatible with larger and heavier lenses from the four thirds series; it's built for heavy use; it has a top notch huge EVF and extremely fast focusing; and it is targeted at a pro or semi pro user. If you wanted to compare apples with apples, you would be looking at a much higher level camera in Canon's line up, and I guarantee you it would be a heck of a lot bigger....

Plus, no matter what the body size of an M43 camera, the native lenses are ALL smaller and lighter than the ones for a comparable Canikon....

If you wanted a more appropriate comparison, you should look at, say, a G5 vs the SL1, instead....and even then, the lenses will be smaller....

This is a comparison of a cheap, entry-level DSLR and a substantial, top of the line mirrorless. Here is comparison of camera bodies with more corresponding feature sets:
