DSLR camera makes clicking sound when taking pictures

Every time I press the button to take a picture, I'd hear this sound coming out of my Canon T5i DSLR camera. What is this sound and is it normal? my point-n-shoot never makes such loud noises. Is there anything I can do to eliminate this sound? It's kind of annoying and makes you wonder if something breaks inside the camera.

What you are hearing is the sound of the mirror moving out of the light path and the shutter opening and closing (see this article on DSLR design). It is perfectly normal, nothing is broken.

The only way to silence it is something like the Jacobson Sound Blimp but this is bulky and expensive at about $1000.00.

That's the best one I've seen here in a while. Three billy goats to you, sir!

You will find that most new DSLR have a silent mode.

Yes indeed, best I've heard in a while at least, had me laughing out loud! I bought this car, and there's a sort of humming noise up front, my iPad doesn't make that noise!

Still, better to ask than to live in ignorance.

Usually just in live-view.

But not the Canon T5i. It doesn't have a silent shutter mode.

The sky is really bright like half of the time, and really dark the rest of the time - is this normal?
I think the question is legitimate. If you're used to P&S cameras or phone cameras, the amount of noise coming out of a DSLR is somewhat startling.

If it was in the EOS 1D forum I'd suspect something.

Yes. On the Beginners Forum we consider there is no such thing as a "silly" question, as such. All questions are assumed to be fully legit, asked in all innocence, and worthy of a courteous and accurate response.

This is not to say that smiling quietly to oneself is totally prohibited, though. ;-)

Another smile...

I recently went up into the loft of my house and found a round, black, flat thing with a hole in the middle. Is this a record?"

A former friend of mine had an old pocket watch that made a ticking sound all the time. I told him to pry the back off and spray a little WD-40 in it. He said the ticking stopped almost instantly. Just sayin'

I agree Barry. I was totally new to photography 2yrs ago & one of the first questions I asked here was "what is the difference between a telephoto & a zoom lens?" I genuinely didn't have a clue! Seems pretty stupid question now, & I chuckle in embarrassment for asking. Like you say, it is a beginners forum.

There's a joke that claims that computer chips run on magic smoke.

The "proof" is that if you "let the smoke out", the chip stops working…

The OP has posted 943 posts since joining in 2004. No offense if this is real but I find it hard (impossible) to believe that someone who has been following photography and this forum for 9+ years has NEVER seen or heard an SLR or DSLR in operation before. Never watched one video camera review, never seen one in a movie, never seen one televised press release, never seen one televised political speech, never seen one on-location news broadcast, never seen a televised sporting event, never seen a televised beauty contest, has never had their photo taken by one, been in proximity to another DSLR user or handled one in a store.

That's like claiming to be un-aware that dogs bark because you've never owned one before.

I felt the question in my response was as serious as the OP's question was likely to be.

Unfortunately, only a few dSLRs have a quiet mode without using Live View or causing some other loss of functionality. The other problem is that even the best Silent Mode features aren't really silent. The sound may be reduced, but it's not silent. To be silent such that the audio techs don't shoot angry glares in your direction, you need a Sound Blimp.

Depends, if it's metal and has a handle it's probably from the old wood stove hiding in the back of the garage ;-)

If it has Max Bygraves on the cover then it's a criminal record!! (Boom Boom).

Since most of the noise is caused by mirror slap, and dampenning is only partially effective, then I don't know what you could do without raising the mirror.

Not quite silent, but some can be very quiet. The Canon 5D III is extremely quiet.

Just noticed the 944 posts the OP has made! I am not usually that gullible, but always a first time :-D
