My A700 died on my honeymoon in June 2011. I couldn't find a replacement Sony A-mount, A57/580/whatever, in Venice. And the rumors of the impending A77...

So I went with a pocketable Canon S95 which was the current S model at the time. I wanted RAW, so it was either the Nikon or Canon. Boy, lots change in just 2 years!

It's small, has an f2 capable lens and shoots RAW+JPG. If you don't mind the missing viewfinder, non-articulating LCD, and sometimes plastic-y photos, it does an admirable job.

On trips it comes with me as a backup and it's the cam I take to stupid places like dinner so I can put it in my pocket or hand it to the waiter.

Rx100, what else :-)? But be careful, it could be addictive...

It's a wonderful little camera with amazing quality... better than any APS-C camera with kit lens (in my opinion). Yes there's no viewfinder, but you can adapt very fast, even if long-sighted. My way to use its nice EVF is just for framing and prefocus; then I look directly at my subject and shot when I like... It really helps in enviromental portraits or street photo...Afterword you are plenty to crop in PP, and best frame your pic, with its clean 20 Mpx...

Rx 100 is really a stepstone and makes hard to pick a different camera if you have no specific reason to do it (thin DOF, long zooms, sports etc).

After buying my Rx100, I realized that my m4/3 camera system (Panasonic Gh2, Gf1 with some primes) was not enough better quality (if even) to justify the (limited) bulk. I could have jump on Olympus OM-5/EP-5 bandwagon, but I decided it would be better to buy a "real" camera for times I need a better IQ and flexibility.

Feel free to laugh, but its my old a55. It's way smaller than my a77, uses the same lenses, has both a flip screen and VF, and seems pretty bombproof. I'm waiting on the NEX-6 update to retire it. I also have a fire-sale Eos M. Not bad, but not Sony. Don't want too have to buy into a new ecosystem of glass.

Fyi, the a55 body is only slightly larger eons the EOS M with 22mm. Even with the 35 or 50 on it, it's barely twice as thick.

I love my a55 and won't replace it with another a5x model

For the longest time, I used the Canon S90. Very good camera, and I suspect the S110 is even better. However, I decided to go with the Panasonic LX7, mostly because of the fast aperture throughout the range. I am very satisfied with this camera!

To back up my A99 I now use the RX1. If I want to travel really light I shoot with the RX1 and back it up with the RX100.

I used to have the A77 and I used the Nex-7 and Zeiss 24mm as back up. I plan to also travel with the Nex-7 and 18-200 and back that up with the RX100 if I feel the need for a 12X zoom.

Ultimately as you can see the RX100 is the ideal travel/back up camera.
How do you get 12x telephoto with the RX100?

I went from superzoom cameras to ILC and won't go back to small sensor cameras for any reason. Besides, I'm a woman and we don't need "pocketable" because we never have pockets worth a damn... Purses can hold small real cameras... I also will not have a camera with no eye-level viewfinder.

So a few months ago I thought my A77 is heavy and I find myself leaving it at home, I want something lighter. My A55 and A77 are very similar (I upgraded) and I can give my A55 to a step-son who has an old A200. So of course I looked at NEX. I did not buy a NEX. Most important reason, no in-body stabilization. I've had in-body stabilization on most of my cameras since superzoom days. Not going back. Also, few lenses. In a thread about NEXes someone mentioned the Olympus OM-D EM-5. I looked into it and bought one. I still have 4/3 lenses. I have a panasonic G1 now converted to infrared and had an Olympus E620 which I sold. I didnt' sell all of the lenses. So now I have two weather-sealed cameras. I'm very happy with my OM-D. And it's very small with the 20mm pancake. Although I usually use the kit lens (weather sealed) or the Panasonic 14-140mm.

I always travel with two cameras and often walk around with two cameras (with different lens types or maybe normal and infrared).

RX1 + RX100

Either can handle with ease...

I normally shoot with A99 previously I used a [A77, A700, A100]. with the usual lenses (Sony 70-200G, Sony 24-70Z, 50mm F1.4, Bigma, Rokinon 8mm Fisheye ) plus Minolta 35mm film lenses from 25 years ago ( 50mm 2.8 macro, 28-85xi, 28-135AF, 100mm AF Soft Focus) ) . For the last couple of years my backup pocket camera has been a Panasonic GX1 with 20mm F1.7, 25mm F1.3 Leica, Olympus 45mm F1.8 and the awful Pan cake zoom).

Last month I purchased the Sony RX100m2 and kept it a couple of weeks. It had hardware reliability /battery problems.:-( Also RX100m2 is very small and I have big hands ... Just too darn small and not enough buttons for direct control. I sent it back for a refund. I have ordered a GX7.

GaryG :-)

I just picked up a rx100 and don't regret it.

I picked up an RX-100 II on release. I've used it sparingly, but IMO, the hi-ISO is superb. No problem with ISO-3200. Really amazing for a small sensor camera.

This little bundle is difficult to master coming from the A-77, but so far, I mostly attribute it to user error ;-)
