I'd like to get a handholdable 300mm or higher lens so I was curious to see which lens the photographer used on this bird shot. I didn't expect to get all this information by right-clicking on the inage and clicking Properties (after downloading the jpg and opening with ACDSee). Is this usual for a newspaper photo?

Anyway, it seems a good way to get some insight.

1/3200 sec. suprised me.

I'd have been pleased/surprised to see that the 100-400L had been used since that's the lens that I'm thinking of getting (instead of the 300 2.8 with 1.4X TC the photojournalist used or the 400mm DO).

Maybe 6 lbs. without a TC for the 300 2.8 isn't that handholdable. Decisions, decisions.

The guy that took that shot is my friend/mentor. I can tell you that as a photojournalist, he doesn't have a lot of time to be messing with EXIF data or RAW photos, etc. He goes out, takes the picture, does minimal cropping, and sends it in.

I don't personally see the value in taking the time to strip the data. It's not like it's proprietary information or anything.

Thanks for your post. That shot was perfect for its purpose. I never purposefully strip the data - I guess it just happens automatically when I compress for emailing. I'd prefer that that didn't happen.

Yea, Mike is real good. He has been shooting for 20+ years as a pro.

How do you compress your photos? Using Photoshop, I believe it only strips the EXIF data if you "save for web".

Opening up Photoshop is an ordeal with my current PC. I can right click and have several options of compressing courtesy of Windows XP and also my HP printer software. I'll be getting a new PC and be using PS for everything soon. Thanks.
