D700 Aperture having no effect on exposure

Okay, so I've been having this weird problem a few times lately... Changing the aperture is having no effect on exposure.

So for example, today. I'm using a external strobe and Manual mode. Shutter is on 200 and ISO is also lowest it can be at 200. I'm out in the sun so thing are pretty bright. Overexposed, in fact. Since I'm already at the lowest ISO, and highest sync speed for the shutter, the only thing I can do is close up the aperture... but this does nothing. I close it up, take another photo...still over exposed. Eg, looking at these raw files, there is literally NO difference between f5.6 and f11!

Is there something wrong with the gear or have I done some weird setting that's screwing me up? Haha :/

Not so.

As the OP says, the original shot is overexposed so the only meaningful way to manually compensate is to close the diaphragm and let less light in. Then, if auto ISO is on, the camera will "contra" compensate by bumping ISO up sticking to the original picture exposition.

can you post an example with the full exif?

What shutter speed/apertures are you using (r camera setting for you; i.e. p or other A/S mode) in this bright sun?

If your camera is setting (typically) 1/200th/ f16/ ISO 200 in these conditions and you are still getting way over exposed shots, I suspect the aperture is not stopping down fully, or at all.

Post something, please.

Did you try to dial some compensation in? If using strobes in very bright conditions you may find the long shutter speed is causing issues?

Any time I've had exposure issues on a 700 either dialling in compensation or changing the f stop has worked for me.

Pictures with details would help. Could of course be the metering not dealing with the dynamic range??

Sorry for late reply guys. The problem is killing me! It only occurs with my 70-200.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about.

For ALL images, Iso was 200. For ALL images, shutter was 1/200. I double checked in the exif after.

In fact, you can see the exif info on these images here, in a zip:

Bizarrely 4.5 looks DARKER than f22! This lens is fuarked it seems?

Looks like the diaphragm on the lens is stuck can if your do a DOF preview does the lens diaphragm change?

So basically, I tried DOF preview looking through the lens to see what happens at f22. A did this several times. ONE time it did seem to close up tight. Half the other times it did not close at all. And the remaining times it only closed halfway and sort of did it slowly like it was struggling. Dayum.

Looks like the lens need to be sent to Nikon.
